| 附註項 | Suraj A. Pandit received his M.A. in Archaeology (1999) from Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune, and in Buddhist Studies (2015) from Mumbai University. He received his Ph.D. in Ancient Indian Culture from Mumbai University in 2005. He is presently professor and head of the Department of Ancient Indian Culture and Department of Buddhist Studies at Sathaye College. His primary research interests include Indian Buddhist rock-cut architecture. He has published his research in English and Marathi including works on Kanheri caves, urban archaeology of Mumbai metropolitan region, epigraphy, numismatics and folk literature and oral traditions in early medieval period. He has nine books published in his name as author and co-author. |

| 摘要 | Kanheri is one of the important rock-cut Buddhist monastic settlements located within the boundaries of the metropolitan city of Mumbai. The site of Kanheri is surrounded by a forest, known as the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, giving us glimpses of the ancient natural landscape in which the monastery flourished. This landscape has been perceived in different ways over time. The changing perception of mankind of the sacred geography associated with Kanheri is reflected in the tangible and intangible culture associated with the site. Though the tangible remains remained in the form of archaeological evidence, intangible traditions need to be reconstructed from the scanty data available to us. The paper intends to discuss the use of space at the site of Kanheri as reflected in the archaeological and literary evidence. An attempt to shed light on the evolving sacred geography associated with Kanheri is made in this paper. |
