Après avoir illustré par plusieurs exemples le procédé linguistique, assez original parmi les cultures sinisées, grâce auquel le japonais permet l'acculturation et l'intégration jusque dans la langue parlée de citations et de proverbes d'origine chinoise, voire indienne, notre communication entreprend de montrer sur un exemple précis: «Ombre d'un même arbre, eau d'un même fleuve, lien d'une autre vie∞, comment la triple stratification linguistique allant d'une source bouddhique savante de langue chinoise jusqu'à sa forme proverbiale populaire a entraîné un changement dans la représentation d'un concept bouddhique fondamental.
The purpose of this paper is first to illustrate the strategy of appropriation of Chinese or, more broadly, continental lore by Japanese culture through a language-shift device that achieves both to save the formal linguistic aspect of Chinese and to allow a perfectly Japanese oral realization, this process being rather different from what prevails in other sinitic areas. Then, it proceeds to show how the language stratification through which developped a popular proverbial saying “The shadow of one tree, the water from one stream: a link from (or: for) another life" from learned Buddhist sources in Chinese to colloquial Japanese explains the conspicuous change in its understanding of a basic buddhist concept.
