| 摘要 | 이 글은 조계종 전 종정 퇴옹성철(1912-1993)의 대표 저술에서 강조되는 개념이자 선(禪)의 핵심 개념인 견성과 성불이, 성철의 부처님오신날 법어에서 어떻게 표현되고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써 불교 콘텐츠에서 불교 주제를 구현하는 방식의 일면을 모색하고자 한 것이다. 불교와 관련한 콘텐츠를 제작할 때 무엇보다 중요한 것은 불교적 가치를 구현하는 일이다. 불교 콘텐츠로 구성되는 불교 요소들이 콘텐츠의 소재라면 불교적 가치는 콘텐츠의 실질적인 주제 역할을 하기 때문에 진정한 불교 콘텐츠를 제작하는 일은 주제의 구현에 있다고 하겠다. 우리말로 되어 있는 성철의 부처님오신날 법어와 성철 스스로 “부처님께 밥 값 했다”고 할 정도로 대표적인 저술인 『선문정로』 사이에는 형식 면에서 큰 차이가 있다. 그러나 이러한 형식의 차이에도 불구하고 성철의 부처님오신날 법어는 대표 저술에서 전하려고 하는 핵심 내용, 즉 선문의 근본인 견성과 성불을 온전히 담고 있다. 이처럼 『선문정로』 의 핵심 내용이 부처님오신날 법어에 담겨 있다는 점에서 성철의 대중법어는 방편과 콘텐츠에 대해 시사하는 점이 크다. 한문 문장을 사용해 불교 고유의 개념으로도 표현할 수 있는 내용을 성철은 대중을 고려해 보편적으로 사용하는 한글 문장으로 법어를 발표하였다. 그러나 단순히 한문을 한글로 푸는 데 그친 것이 아니라 불교의 핵심 개념을 정확하게 담아내었다. 전하고자 하는 불교 개념의 핵심 구조를 완전히 정립하고 있었기 때문이다. 성철에게 방편은 그러한 핵심구조를 바탕으로 어떻게 전하는가 하는 방법의 문제였다. 불교 용어를 사용하지 않고 완전한 한글만으로도 불교 가치를 구현한 성철의 부처님오신날 법어처럼, 불교 콘텐츠가 온갖 매체를 통해 다양한 형식을 갖더라도 콘텐츠에 담기는 주제의식만큼은 불교 가치를 정확하게 담고 있어야 하는 것이다. 불교 콘텐츠가 불교 가치라는 주제의식을 잃어버리면 그저 방편에만 매몰되어 시류만 따라가는 유행이 되어버림으로써 불교 본연의 역할을 할 수 없게 될 것이기 때문이다. This paper is to find a way of realizing the theme of buddhism in the buddhist content through examining how the buddhist key concepts of Seeing Self-Nature (見性) and Attaining the Buddhahood (成佛), which are also stressed in his masterpiece, are expressed in the Vesak messages delivered by Ven. Toe-ong Seongcheol (1912-1993), the late Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye Order. When producing the content about buddhism, it is the most important that we must realize the value of buddhism. True buddhist content depends on realizing the theme of buddhism, because, when the buddhist content consists of materials and the theme, this is the value of buddhism ; that is the element. His Vesak messages written in Korean ordinary language differ from his masterpieces the Seonmun-jeongno (禪門正路, Authentic Way of Seon) in form. However, his messages contain whole the key concepts of Seeing Self-Nature and Attaining the Buddhahood in his masterpiece, which makes his messages full of suggestions for the content and the skillful means. Considering people, he delivered his Vesak message in perfect Korean language, not in Chinese nor with original buddhist terms. His messages were not just translations from Chinese into Korean, rather, they contained exact buddhist key concepts in Korean. It was derived from his establishing the core structure of the concepts of buddhism. The skillful means to him were mean by only a way to deliver the key concepts to people. As his Vesak messages realize the value of buddhism only with perfect Korean, without any buddhist term, the buddhist content out of many forms of media must have correct value of buddhism as its theme. When it lose its theme of the value of buddhism, the buddhist content couldn’t play a natural buddhist role, for it will be lost in the skillful means and be just fashion. |
