摘要
현대 생태론의 발달과 더불어 ‘생태불교학’이 대두되었고, 우리나라에서도 이를 수용하면서 ‘불교생태학’의 연구와 논의가 진행되어 왔다. 불교생태학에서는 심층생태론의 견해를 받아들이면서 생태계의 파괴를 불러일으킨 근본원인으로 서양의 여러 가지 사유방식을 비판하였다. 그리고 지금까지 불교생태학의 연구는 생태계 파괴의 원인이 된 서구의 사유방식을 극복할 대안이 될 수 있는 원리들을 불교 속에서 찾아내는 일에 중점을 두고 진행되어 왔다. 그러나 불교생태학은 그동안 인류를 지배하면서 생태계를 위기로 몰아넣은 자본주의의 특징과 메커니즘에 대해서는 깊이 다루지 못했다. 그러므로 불교생태학이 앞으로 한 걸음더 나아가기 위해서는 불교의 지적 전통 속에 들어있었던 생태학적 지혜를 살려내 생태계의 위기를 초래한 자본주의 산업문명을 어떻게 변혁해 나갈 것인가를 연구해야 한다. 이 글은 그동안 불교생태학에서 제시해 온 불교의 생태적 지혜를 체계적으로 정리해봄으로써 그간의 연구 성과를 점검하고, 앞으로 불교생태학이 자본주의 사회체계가 초래한 생태계의 위기를 극복하고 이 지구상의 모든 생명들이 평화롭고 조화로운 행복의 세계로 나아가는 문명의 대전환을 앞당기기 위해 노력해야 할과제들을 제시해보았다.
EcoBuddhism have rised in company with growth of the modern Ecology. Along with the rising of EcoBuddhism, Buddhist Ecological study have progressed in Korea. Buddhist Ecology accepted the views of Deep Ecology, so regarded the root cause of ecosystem’s destruction as western ways of thinking. Until now Buddhist Ecological study have laid emphasis on finding alternative principles of Buddhism that could overcome the problems of western ways of thinking. But Buddhist Ecology have not studied deep into the features and mechanism of capitalism that have destroyed ecosystem so far. Therefore Buddhist Ecology must study the ways to change capitalist industrial civilization in order to take a step forward. The aim of this thesis is to organize the research results of Buddhist Ecology systematically and to suggest the future tasks of Buddhist Ecology in order to overcome ecosystem’s crisis which is caused by capitalist social system.
