The purpose of this thesis is to deal with the problem of ‘mutual identification’(相 卽) of Sengchao(僧肇, 384-414), as a transformed thought on the theory of ‘the middle way’(中道) and ‘the theory of two truth’(二諦論) shown in Mulamadhyamakakarika. In short, this is an attempt to critically examine a view of Sengchao which reflects Chinese Buddhist tradition, from the lens of Indian Madhyamaka. Especially among the interpretive points of Sengzhao’s view, the targets will be put on his interpretive trends, postulating a new idea that ‘neither existent nor non-existent’(非有非無) expressed as a negation of ‘existence’(有) and ‘non-existence’ (無) is a ‘mutual identification(相卽)’ indicating new things or emphasizing an aspect of substance. It will be argued that this sort of interpretation can never be supported from the Indian Madhyamaka``s perspectives. Accordingly, it is necessary to explore the underlying causes from which this controversy has been raised. According to Swanson, the embers of these debate remains, since Sengchao attempted to explain the ‘Paramartha Satya’, despite the fact that a metaphor of ‘neither existent nor non-existent’ is an inappropriate term to describe the theory of two fold truth. To be more specific, if we admit the existence of ‘neither existent nor non-existent’ too actively, there comes out a room for understanding it as a new existence that can be indicated, separated from the ultimate truth’(眞諦) and ‘conventional truth’(俗諦). In some sense, it might be possible to consider a new referent if we understand the traits of the ‘neither existent nor non-existent’ from the approach of the next generation like Swanson. Yet, should we interpret the ‘Chao Lun’(肇論), following the perspectives of Indian Madhyamkas, Sengcho``s stance on mutual identification would be represented more clearly. With this critical mind, this research compares the theory of two truth and the mutual identification of Sengchao, following the Indian Madhyamaka tradition. In this process, this study attempts to induce ideological similarities and differences between these two traditions. For this, the idea of Sengchao``s mutual identification will be seen as a product of Chinese transformation of thought different from the view on the middle path of Indian Madhyamaka. According to Sengchao, ‘neither existent’ revealed as the ultimate truth and ``nor non-existent`` as the conventional truth is mutually identified in the Pa
