This study intends to find out whether Ayuta, where Gaya accepted Buddhism from, was a city that existed then or not, using Chinese Sutras. There are three main theories about the existence of Ayuta which is assumed to be the place where Gaya Buddhism came from. The first theory is, seeing Ayuta in the Chinese Sutras as the current Ayodhya in North India. This theory accepts the 「Story of the Geumgwan Gaya(駕洛國記)」 in the 『Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms(三國遺事)』as a historical account, insisting Buddhism was transmitted to Gaya from Ayuta. The second theory states, the name Ayuta came from an Indian literature, 『Ramayana』 which is a Hindu mythology. It says Ayodhya where Rama was born in 『Ramayana』is actually an Ancient Indian city called Saketa. Also, in the second theory, the 「Story of the Geumgwan Gaya」 in 『Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms』 is considered a folktales, not a historical event. The third theory states that Ayuta is either Ayodhya Kuppam or a part of Ayodha Kuppam which is located in the South India. It says the name Ayuta did come from 『Ramayana』, yet, the geographical existence of the city itself is still considerable. Through researching Chinese Sutras about the existence of Ayuta, it can be summarized as the follow. Looking at the sound-translation words from the Chinese Sutras, Ayuta has at least ten sound-translations, and it can be written in fourteen different Chinese characters. In one of the early sutras,『Agama(雜阿含經)』, Ayuta is sound-translated to Abhisa(阿毘도) or Abhita(阿毘陀), and Saketa is sound-translated to Sagi(娑祇) or Pagi(婆祇). This shows Ayuta and Saketa existed in the same period. Therefore, the second theory, saying Saketa is the same as Ayuta, is contradictory. Some scholars say that since the name Ayuta was not found in any records before Faxien``s travelogue, 『Record of the Buddhistic Kingdoms(高僧法顯傳)』, it proves that Saketa is the same place as Ayuta in 『Ramayana』. Only, it should be reconsidered due to Ayuta actually being found as Ayungsa(阿迎도) and Asusa(阿輸도) in the earlier records, 『Bulsulsumalsophyo-gyung(佛說水沫所漂經)』and 『Buddhacarita(佛所行讚)』. In conclusion, referring to the Early Sutras, Ayuta seems to be existed then, containing many episodes related to the Buddha and was cherished by many people as a sacred place. It is not clear how Buddhism transmitted to Gaya from Ayuta, yet, it does not look like a total fiction at least. |
