摘要
이 논문은 한국 근대불교의 성격을 밝히고, 한국 근대불교의 연속선상에 있는 한국 현대불교의 과제와 전망을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 우선, 유럽의‘근대’를 활판인쇄술의 보급과 지식의 대중화 그리고 글말과 입말의 일치, 주체의 발견 등의 특징으로 설명하였다. 다음으로, 우리가 가리키는 ‘근대불교’가 ‘유럽적 부디즘’의 번역어라는 점을 밝히고, ‘한국 근대불교’의 출발시기에 나타난 특징들을 고찰하였다. 다음으로, 19세기 유럽인들이 창안한 ‘유럽적 부디즘’을 살펴보고, ‘한국 근대불교’와 그 내용과 기준이 다를 수밖에 없음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로, 그 과정을 통해 드러나게 되는 한국불교의 과제와 전망으로, 오래되었지만 여전히 미래적인 다음 사항들에 진전이 있어야 한다고 제안했다. 첫째, 전통불교를 잘 이해해야 한다. 둘째, 세계불교를 잘 이해 해야 한다. 셋째, 첫째와 둘째 문제를 충족하기 위해 불교경전들을 철저한 현대 한국어로 번역을 해야 한다. 넷째, 셋째를 위해 불경 번역자와 불교 연구자 수가 증가해야 한다. 다섯째, 대학의 불교 강좌 수가 증가해야 한다. 여섯째, 생활불교와 학문불교 모두에 불교적 지혜의 문인 깨달음이라는 전제가 필요하다.
The purpose of this paper is to reveal the characteristics of modern Korean Buddhism, and to illuminate the challenges and prospects of contemporary Korean Buddhism in South Korea which is over an extension of Korean modern Buddhism. First, I explained the characteristics of European ‘modernity’, which are the typography supplies, the popularization of knowledge, and the unity of the written language and the spoken language, the discovery of the subject. Second, I said that the ‘modern Buddhism’ commonly used in Korea, is a translation of ‘(European) Buddhism’ and I investigated the characteristics of modern Korean Buddhism appeared on the starting time of the ‘Modern Korean Buddhism.’ Third, I looked at the ‘(European) Buddhism’ invented by Europeans in 19th century. I think that ‘Modern Buddhism’ and ‘(European) Buddhism’ are not same in their contents and standards inevitably. Finally, in view of the challenges of Korean prospected Buddhism revealed through the process of the above explanation, I suggested that there should be progresses in the followings, which are old but still : First, we should have a good understanding of the traditional Buddhism. Second, we should have a good understanding of the world Buddhism. Third, we must translate the classical Buddhist scriptures into modern Korean thoroughly in order to meet the first and second issues. Fourth, we have to increase the number of translators and researchers of the Buddhist sutras for the third. Fifth, the number of university courses to be related to Buddhism need to be increased. Sixth, the premise of Buddhist wisdom of enlightenment is in need for both academic Buddhism and Buddhist teachings in life.
