The references of the Painting of Sixteen Lohans and the Painting of Five Hundred Lohans that are created during the Goryeo Dynasty or the Joseon Dynasty are only around 15pieces all over the world, including the Painting of Five Hundred Lohans(500羅漢圖) with the form of single canvas; the Painting of Sixteen Lohans that remain today are only 4pieces: 2 pieces of 16-canvas form where each Lohan is painted in each of 16 canvases, and 2 pieces of single-canvas form where all the 16 Lohans are painted on single canvas. As for the Joseon Dynasty, the reference pieces of the Painting of Five Hundred Lohans are very few: we can find only one piece of the Painting of Five Hundred Lohans(1562) located in L.A County Museum; there is almost no painting created in the first half of the Joseon Dynasty except the references of the Painting of Sixteen Lohans that were created in 18~20th century. The Painting of Sixteen Lohans created in the 18~20th century is diversified with 4 forms: multi-canvas forms(多幅式) with a painting divided on 6, 4 or 2 canvases, and single-canvas form(一幅式) with a painting on a single canvas. After the pieces of 6-canvas form such as the Painting of Sixteen Lohans at Yeosu Heungguksa Temple created in 1723 and the Painting of Sixteen Lohans at Suncheon Songgwangsa Temple created in 1725, the number of canvases are diminishing to 4, 2 and 1 as the time descends. Particularly the < Painting of Trifoliate Statue of Shakyamuni and Sixteen Lohans at Bulamsa Temple (佛巖寺 釋迦三尊16羅漢圖) > is a noticeable Buddhist painting with the『Form of split faces on single Canvas(一幅面分割式)』where the trifoliate statue of Shakyamuni and 16 Lohans are painted on 18 faces split on a single canvas. The canvas composition that splits a canvas into several faces as shown in the Painting of Sixteen Lohans at Bulamsa Temple has a direct relationship with the Painting of Sixteen Lohans at Gilsangam in Haeinsa temple, which is painted separately on two canvases, each of which is split into 8 faces, with 2 vertical and 4 horizontal slices. It is comprehended that the figures of the Painting of Sixteen Lohans have a strong influence from the Painting of Sixteen Lohans in Heungguksa Temple in Namyangju that is drawn based on 『Hongssisunbulgijong(洪氏仙佛奇踪)』 and 『Samjaedohoe(三才圖會)』. Ofcourse, they are not exactly the same, but the almost whole of the figures are identical except a couple of different ones, proving sufficiently that they have an influencing relationship with each other. Based on this, the study on the Painting of Sixteen Lohans in Bulamsa Temple focusing on the characteristics of its figures and its forms seemed to help to take a step further to the understanding of the characteristics of the figures and forms of the Painting of Trifoliate Statue of Shakyamuni and Sixteen Lohans(釋迦三尊16羅漢圖) in the 19~20th century, including the P |
