This study examines the similarities and differences of Alaya-vijnana and unconsciousness in influencing our mental activity. The early Buddhism limited mental activity to the teachings of six sense organs and eighteen dhatus. Later, however, Yogacara of Mahayana Buddhism defined the consciousness at the foundation of the human mind as the eighth Alaya-vijnana. Yogacara argued that Alaya-vijnana is the only place where awareness that creates and leads the world takes place. Meanwhile, in the West, attempts were made to explore human psychology corresponding to Alaya-vijnana of Buddhism, and psychology was on the rise as a new research field for both academic study and treatment of mental illness. The attempts bore fruit as Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung found `the unconscious`. Freud and Jung`s concept of the unconscious does not refer to simple non-existence of consciousness, Rather, it refers to a field or area where mental activity affecting awareness does not take place, but other mental elements exist. As the source of awareness, storage of energy, and source of existence, which are the commonality of Alaya-vijnana and the unconscious, Alaya-vijnana works in a clearer and more active way than the unconscious. Alaya-vijnana is also active as the subject of Samsara and the substantiality of enlightenment, which are not shared by the unconscious. Though the unconscious falls short of Alaya-vijnana, both of them create our senses(six sense organs) and store energy that creates everything. Alaya-vijnana and the unconscious seem to share a common denominator, a field where mental elements stay, in view of their function as storage, but they are two different mental aggregations. Alaya-vijnana creates all things and becomes what those things made, whereas the unconscious only poses the possibility without reacting to the action. As a new research tool, brain science may shed some light on the existence of Alaya-vijnana of Yogacara and the unconscious placed deeper than Alaya-vijnana. The author considers that this study provides an opportunity to study the effect of Alaya-vijnana and the unconscious on human thinking and sentiment by examining their activity as storage of mental energy and their relationship. Buddhism has developed versatile tools for discerning the deep level of consciousness of mind like meditation, muttering Mantra, visualizing Mandala which have possibilities of curing diseases of mind in the future. The beginning of the psychology of western society begins with the researches on the subconsciousness of mind but it eventually focuses on the reality of ego and passions of selfness which will be the key to make Buddhism to be known to western world. |
