Human-being needs religion for various reasons. Sometimes, however, the doctrine of religion becomes the task that needs to be solved before becoming the tool to life because it is profound and philosophical. For Buddhism, this is more critical because the ultimate goal of Buddhism is deep understanding and enlightenment about the human psyche. Thus, in order to reach the ultimate goal of Buddhism, it is deemed necessary to use background elements which are supporting the context of the scriptures to enhance understanding of Buddhism as well as to explore the doctrine. Plant research is also one of them. Because plants are not only the biological being but also they are the being which contains the central thesis of scripture that makes it easy for the writer of scripture to convey what the writer wants to convey. In Buddhist scriptures, through the process of metaphor and symbolism, plants are contained as the tool of majesty and ritual which conveys doctrine implicitly, maximizes religious sanctification and embodies doctrine. This study is the first step of the plant research in ‘Mahayana Buddhist scriptures’, such as 『Avatamsaka sutra』, 『Saddharmapundarika sutra』 and 『Mahaparinirvana sutra』. And the plants in 『Avatamsaka sutra』 will be the subject of the research. The point of this study is to reveal Natural scientific entity and organize the role of plants which are contained in scripture into three ways [The implications of doctrine, the sanctification of religion, and the tools of majesty and ritual] through the complete enumeration of plants in scripture. Total of 35 species of plants were recorded In 『Avatamsaka sutra』, and there are 18 species of woody plants and 17 species of herbs. Especially, it is the characteristic of 『Avatamsaka sutra』 that the number of the ‘the Lotus’ and ‘the Bo tree’ were significantly higher than other Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. |
