The purpose of this study is to explore the possibilities of marine cultural exchange between ancient Garak Kingdom of Korea and Ayuta Kingdom of India with special reference to Pasa Stone Pagoda which is said to have been brought to Garak Kingdom by Indian princess Heo Hwang-ok. Pasa Stone Pagoda has a very important meaning in relation to the matter of Gaya Buddhism and the birthplace of Heo Hwang-ok. Because Pasa Stone Pagoda is not only recorded in the Samguk Yusa, but it is presumed that the real remains. The Pasa Stone Pagoda is the most concrete example of direct cultural exchange between the ancient Korea and India. The appearance of Pasa Stone Pagoda in front of the tomb of Indian Queen Heo Hwang-ok is generally consistent with the descriptions of the Samguk Yusa. However, it seems impossible to trace the prototype of the Pasa stone pagoda at the stupas and cave temples of India around Around 48 CE. The results of the previous study suggesting the inverted pyramidal type Pasa stone pagoda in relation to harmika, the upper part of the Stupa, are probably due to the misunderstanding of the original meanings and functions of the stupa. From the viewpoint of the original meaning of the stupa, harmika can not be an independent pagoda, and there is no example of a reverse pyramid-shaped pagoda through Indian Buddhism. Judging by the material of the stones of Pasa stone pagoda, it seems that they were not originally stones for building a stone pagoda. In order for any stone to be used as a material for a stone pagoda, it must, above all, be homogeneous throughout. If the stone quality is not uniform, it can not be finely elaborated and can not be preserved for a long time. However, the stones of Pasa Stone Pagoda are not homogeneous at all. Each stone constituting the pagoda is a breccia with a hard part and a loose part. Therefore, it is more natural to see that the stones of Pasa stone pagoda was not stones for a stone pagoda at first. In this study, it is suggested that the stones of Pasa stone pagoda originally came into Garak Kingdom as ballast stones of the ship of Indian Princess Heo Hwang-ok. The stones that originally came into the Garak country as ballast stones of the ship were later made into stone pagodas. |
