한국 선시에서 ‘만당구승(晩唐九僧)’과 ‘소순기(蔬筍氣)’를 통한 품평 - 긍정 및 부정 평가를 중심으로=A study on Influence of ‘mandangguseung (晩唐九僧)’ and ‘sosunjigi(蔬筍氣)’ on Korea seon poetry's criticism
한국 선시(禪詩)의 품평에 있어 ‘만당구승(晩唐九僧)’과 ‘소순기(蔬筍氣)’는 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 고려말 이숭인(李崇仁, 1347~1392)은 당시 최고의 시승(詩僧)이었던 천봉 만우(千峰 卍雨, 1357~1447)의 문집에 발문을 쓰면서 만우를 ‘만당구승’에 비견하였다. 또한 조선 중기 허균(許筠, 1569~1618)은 사명유정(四溟 惟政, 1544~1610)의 문집 <서> 등에서 대사의 시를 ‘만당구승’의 시와 같은 반열이라고 하였다. 허균이 활동하던 조선 중기는 唐시풍이 유행하던 시기로 이러한 허균의 찬사는 매우 의미가 깊다. 그러므로 만당구승은 한국 선시 품평에서 주로 긍정적인 평판에 쓰였다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 찬탄은 극소수에 지나지 않고 대체로 한국 선시의 품격은 ‘소순기’를 통해 평가 절하된다. 고려시대에 ‘소순기’는 선시 품평의 한 기준으로써 객관적인 의미로 쓰였지만, 조선 초기 서거정에 의하여 부정성이 강조된다. 이후 조선 중후기에 걸쳐 선시 품평에 있어서 ‘소순기’의 부정성은 계승되었고, 승가에서도 이를 수용하였다. 즉 조선 중·후기의 사대부 문인들은 선사들의 문집의 서문을 통해 ‘탈소순기(脫蔬筍氣)’를 강조하였고, 이를 승가(僧家)에서도 받아들이며 서로 권유하였다. 하지만 조선 후기에는 정약용(丁若鏞, 1762~1836) 등이 연담 유일(蓮潭 有一, 1720~1799)과 아암 혜장(兒庵 惠藏, 1772∼1811)의 시를 평가하면서 ‘소순기’의 긍정성을 다시 인정하며, 부정적인 산도기(酸饀氣)와는 구분하기도 하였다. 따라서 한국 선시 품평에서 ‘만당구승’과 ‘소순기’는 중요한 선시 품평의 수단이 되고 있음을 알 수 있는데, 그 중 만당구승은 찬사의 품격으로 쓰일 때 비교되는 키워드이며, 소순기는 부정성을 강조할 때 쓰이는 키워드임을 알 수 있다. 물론 소순기의 긍정적인 면이 강조 되는 경우도 일부 있음을 살펴볼 수 있다.
