| 摘要 | Late Ming literati were quite fascinated with the topic of dreams, trying to establish the exact nature of dreams and to classify their types, as well as to interpret their meaning. Late Ming prominent Buddhist monks also did often use the phenomenon of dreams as an object of their philosophical inquiry and observation. Wang Kentang (王肯堂, ), being one of the important figures in the late Ming intellectual landscape, did not escape the trend and also touched on the topic of dreams in his writings. In his You gang zhai bi chen (鬱岡齋筆塵) Wang Kentang follows A New Account of the Tales of the World (Shi shuo xin yu, 世說新語) and seeks an answer to the question the young Wei Jie (衛玠) addressed to Yu Guang (樂廣) in the Letters and Scholarship ( Wenxue 文學) chapter: “What the dreams are actually?” The answer by Yu Guang puzzled Wei Jie to the degree of becoming ill: dreams are thoughts, as they are results of causes1. Wang Kentang, as a prominent late Ming Yogācāric thought scholar and a disciple of master Zibo Zhenke (紫柏真可), seeks an appropriate Yogācāric interpretation of this intriguing explanation by Yu Guang with the guidance of his Buddhist master Zibo Zhenke. In this article I will try to use Wang Kentang’s intellectual diversity as the foundation and find the background story for his understanding of the nature of the dreams, basing my research on his intellectual diaries You gang zhai bi chen, as well as his medical and Buddhist commentaries. |
