Chobalsim Jagyeongmun (初發心自警文, Buddhist scripture for novices), is the title of a volume that binds three copies of Chosim (誡初心學人文), Balsim (發心修行章), and Jagyeong (自警序) into one. The book not only contains teachings of enlightenment, but also emphasizes gyeonghun (警訓, lessons) that novice trainees should follow and be aware of in everyday practice. In particular, Chobalsim Jagyeongmun was published centered at major Buddhist temples nationwide in mid-Joseon Dynasty, which suggests the use of the book. It was chosen as a textbook for Samigwa (沙彌科) subject at Gangwon (講院), which is a traditional Buddhist education institute, and it is still being used as an essential beginner’s guidebook in Buddhist priesthood education these days. Although this book has been used as fundamental data regarding the practice tradition in Korean Buddhism for long period of time, the currently used Chobalsim Jagyeongmun and the copies that have been published since the mid-Joseon Dynasty have different signature mark and contents composition. Furthermore, the texts in the book mention that Jagyeongseo was written by “Ya-woon.” However, there is no specific explanation on who he is and during which period he lived in, other than the name “Ya-woon,” igniting controversy over the author of Jagyeongseo. This study compared the copies of Chobalsim Jagyeongmun that have been published since the binding of the volume to examine the reference of the composition and signature mark of the current Chobalsim Jagyeongmun. The study found out that the composition of contents and title was affected by the copy of Haeinsa Temple although the integrative signature mark of Chobalsim Jagyeongmun began to appear after the copy of Bohyeonsa Temple in Myohyangsan Mountain. Three “Ya-woon” were first listed as the potential author of Jagyeongseo, which were subsequently narrowed down into two persons in Goryeo Dynasty. Among the conflicting views on who he is, this study concluded that Ya-woon refers to Ya-woon Gakgoo (unknown birth and death). Based on a piece of poem contained in Haeinsa Temple copy and a poem by Hamheo Gihwa (1376~1438), this study concluded that Gakgoo who follows the pedigree of Naong Hyegeun is the author of Jagyeongseo. The reason that the texts which had been separately published were combined into one volume was to use it as a fundamental textbook for systematic Buddhist monk education in Buddhist temple. Writings from multiple Zen monks that had been contained in early volumes, such as Mongsan Hwasang’s Buddhist sermon and Sabeopeorok (四法語錄), were omitted from the book after the Haeinsa Temple copy.
