This paper analyzed Hong-ming-ji(弘明集 Collection on the Propagation and Clarification of Buddhism) to consider the Buddhist criticism of Taoism in the Middle Ages of China, Taoist reaction and its influence on the later period. Throughout Hong-ming-ji, as Dharma protection mainly aimed at Confucianism(儒家) that advocated the Chinese traditional culture, almost every Buddhist activity or teaching was clearly intended to overcome Confucianism. On the other hand, unlike such an attitude toward Confucianism, Buddhist arguments against Taoism focused on the superiority of Buddhism over Taoism. Besides, most of those arguments were concentrated in shenxian shù(神仙術), Taoist rituals, Taoist books and doctrines seemed to be tolerated to a certain extent. As regards the thought of Hong-ming-ji, Buddhism competed with Lao-Zhuang thoughts(老莊思想) or the Xuanxue(玄學, literally “Dark Learning”). Despite various Buddhist critiques, Taoist attempted to improve its poor doctrine system and establish rituals by actively accepting Buddhist ideas. At the same time, there were various reform movements within the Taoist order. Such a historical shift of Taoism is reflected in Wei Shu(魏書, the Book of Wei), Shilao zhi (釋老志 Treatise on Buddhism and Taoism), Sui Shu (隋書), and the Preface to Taoistic Canons(道敎序) of Jingji zhi(經籍志 Bibliographical Treatise in the History of the Sui). Moreover, the Taoist order also tried to systematize complicated organization and doctrines, which had been inherited for hundreds of years. As mentioned above, the criticism of Taoism in Hong-ming-ji(弘明集) greatly stimulated the contemporary Taoism. Moreover, abundant literature data, critical arguments and writing style(文體) made Hong-ming-ji a guidebook for later Dharma protectors(護法者). In the Middle ages of China, Buddhism came to have a deeper understanding of Taoism and also began to show a standard pattern in criticizing Taoism and the methodology. In such a long history of Buddhism’s interaction with Taoism, Hong-ming-ji was a database for Dharma protectors. Finally, there are a few questions concerning the critical understanding of Taoism in Hong-ming-ji. First, Hong-ming-ji is a Dharma protective collection of treaties, which was compiled in early 6th century. The majority of those treaties are literary works(文章) of Southern dynasties(南朝). However, Hong-ming-ji contains few mentions about Taoist texts like Shangqing jing(上淸經 Scriptures of Highest Clarity) and Lingbao jing(靈寶經系 Scriptures of Numinous Treasure), both of which were completed one century earlier and influential in the south of the Yangzi river. Second, Hong-ming-ji does not introduce any divinity like Yuanshi Tianzu (元始天尊) nor era names like ‘chiming(赤明 Vermilion Brilliance)’ and ‘kaihuang (開皇 Opening Luminary)’. On the other hand, Wei Shu(魏書, the Book of Wei), Shilao zhi(釋老志 Treatise on Buddhism and Taoism) and Guang-hong-ming-ji(廣弘明集 Expanded Collection on the Propagation and Clarification), all of which were based on writings of Northern dynasties, show a clear understanding of the Taoism of Southern dynasties. It is still unclear how Northern dynasties(北朝) obtained the in formation of Southern dynasties(南朝). This matter will be discussed i |
