In this study, I researched the symbol methods and meaning of the Cham ritual in the Tibetan Buddhist temple Khampagar Monastery in northern India, following my field work survey in 2009. They danced in colourful dress, wore a great variety of masks, and used a number of ritual instruments. Each colour of clothes and masks was fixed toward a particular direction and religious message, whilst the grasped instruments were also fixed. The symbols report the early history of defending Buddhism since Padmasambaba, and the later driving away of the forces of King Langdarma who persecuted Buddhism. In doing all that, they changed the instruction of Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism. The symbolic expressions and their temple pictures were the same as Mandara, meaning Tibetan Cham dances maintains mandara by physical gesture. Choosing three key points among many kinds of instruments, we might alight on Dorje, black hat, and skeleton. Dorje is played as a club, killing the inner and outer obstacles of delusion and hereticism. The black hat symbolizes the defending of buddhism. The skeleton symbolizes the pure condition after extinguishing all that is extrinsic and vainglorious. Following my research, I would like to suggest that the focus of future study on Korean Buddhist rituals should shift from Chinese ritual texts to a wider view, on taking into account cultural context and acting methods, since the implementation style of the Korean ritual is more familiar with a Tibetan style than Chinese. |
