Birds have been considered sacred all over the world since ancient times, and have been worshiped as totems. The ancients added imagination to the bird by combining it with other sacred animal body parts or by adding parts of the bird's body (usually heads). The bird born in this way is Griffon, Phoenix two-headed bird, Three-Legged Crow, Fenghuang, bird with human face. In this paper, I will focus on the two heads. Two-headed bird literally refers to a bird with two heads in one body. There are two headed eagles in the West, the Gandaberunda and Jivajivaka birds in India, and Gongmyonjo(共命鳥) in China and Korea. Thus far, the study of the two-headed bird in the East and the West has been regarded as a separate existence. Therefore, there was few comparative studies showing the correlation between them. the correlation between these two. Also, for the same reason, even if Two-headed bird image are common in the East and the West, no research has been made to find a link between these two regions. Therefore, this study will examine Buddhist scriptures translated and paintings in Korea and China, the literature and artifacts from ancient Near East, India, and its the surrounding area. Through this, we want to find out how perceives the double-headed bird in East and West, where the origin is, and how the double-headed bird spread from west to east. |
