In this paper, the rite of Baru Kongyang through the Table Manners (赴粥飯) on the Chanyuan qinggui (禪苑淸規) and the Soshimgyong (小心經) on the Seongmun uibeom (釋門儀範) have been examined to understand the meaning of Baru Kongyang. Table manners were important in early Indian Buddhism, but in Chinese Buddhism table manners were changed into a ritual at the Vinaya School, and it was reconstructed to apply meditation practice at the Zen School. The offering ritual of the Chinese Zen School influenced Korean Buddhism. The ritual contains a chant for every step, and the chants have the main contents, such as a desire for confession and salvation by recollecting the meritorious Buddha, loving-kindness for animals, time for self-reflection, leading to benefit for oneself and others. This means that in Chinese and Korean Buddhism, the purpose of the rites were to be used as a means of performance rather than merely a ritual. Therefore, even if the ritual formality of Confucian culture had been influenced by the Buddhist offering, the Buddhist offering rite is the result of a special religious life and the culture of Buddhism, in which every living action is a practice, and even eating a meal and its efforts should not lose this aim. Moreover, the determination of treating food in Buddhism was absorbed into Confucianism and spread throughout the Confucian society. In addition, the offering ritual of Korean Buddhism differed from the Chinese. The ritual, Baru Kongyang was accommodated from the Chanyuan qinggui and the Baizhang qinggui (勅修百丈淸規) as well as Scripture of the Garland of Buddhas (華 嚴經) and other ritual books from the Chosun Dynasty era. Even though this ritual is complicated and used mantra a lot more than the Chinese, it explicitly implements the emphasis of the obligation to the Bodhisattva and the extinction of karma. The simplification of the rite and the reduction in the number of practices are expected to affect the transfer and maintenance of the traditional Korean Buddhist offering ritual in tandem with the changing times, so it requires the consideration of the meaning of the rites more deeply. |
