In this study I have researched the history, rituals, musical background and contemporary status of the Japanese Buddhist chant Somyo, using the performances given by the Hieizan Enryakuji Temple and Koyasan Kongofuji Temple ensembles during the Opening Ceremony of Tokyo National Theatre’s 50th anniversary commemoration. The melody of the Enryakujii Tendai Somyo was longer and more elegant than Kongofuji’s. In some parts it was accompanied by the Garaku musical ensemble thanks to them having a relationship with the imperial court. The Kongofuji Temple has a relationship with the imperial court but the temple is situated further away than Enryoji. Another reason was that because the location of Kongofuji is where Ven Kūkai, who founded the Shingon order, passed over to Nirvana, the gorgeous ceremony had been refrained with musical instruments and dance. Instead, here there was an emphasis put on the spiritual vocal melody and religious message. There are three kinds of praise song in Sanskrit(梵讚), Chinese(漢讚), Japanese(和讚). Today’s Japanese Buddhist ritual chant has the sentence style of a ritual text, is poetic(伽陀), is of undefined length in the middle Saimon(祭文)/Hyōhaku(表白), is of a ritual type, and has a sutra recital(誦經), repetition of the sacred name(念佛), and a lecture ceremony(講式). Among the two temples, Enryakuji’s Somyo is nearest in style to the Korean Beompae. This may because the chanting ancestor masters -the Korean Ven Jingam and Japanese Ven En′nin- learned from Tang Dynasty Buddhism during the same period. In particular, of the Korean Yeongje Beompae in Yeongnam province and Kyeonggi in Kyeonggi province including Seoul, the latter bears more similarity to Japanese with the vowel pronunciation AㆍEㆍIㆍOㆍU, because there are only two Youngje vowel sounds, Aeo and Heo. Also the Insung(引聲) in the Kyeongje Beompae is similar to the Japanese Hiku(引く). In addition to these there are many relationships in Buddhist ritual contents and chanting between the Korean and Japanese, including between Todaiji Temple’s great ritual(大佛開眼會), today’s Shikahōyō, and the Silla Dynasty’s Buddhist culture. Thus, further research is necessary. |
