The ceremony of yesujae (預修齋) is a Buddhist rite performed before one’s death during which one makes offerings to the Buddha in hopes of gaining favor in the afterlife. The ceremony is based on susaeng (受生) belief, which asserts that when one is born, one is already indebted for their life in the afterlife. In this ritual, a paper note is burned and sent towards the afterlife in order to repay one’s debt. This paper note is referred to as susaengjeon (受生錢). Susaeng belief is based on the Buddhist and Taoist text Susaenggyeong. Within this text, the sections of Yeongbocheonjonseollokgosusaenggyeong (靈寶天尊說祿庫受生經) and Taesangnogunseorodugeumjangsusaenggyeong (太上老君說五頭金章受生經) deal with Taoist themes, while the section Bulseolsusaenggyeong (佛說受生經 or 佛說修生經) deals with Buddhist themes. However, this religious text is actually a noncanonical sutra compiled by monks in China. In addition to susaeng belief, which is based on the Susaenggyeong, another belief that drove the practice of the yesujae ritual was siwang (十王) belief, which is based on the text Yeomnawangsugisajungyesusiwangsaengchirwangsaengjeongtogyeong (閣羅王受記四衆預修生七往生浄土経). The chilchiljae ritual, which is intimately related to the siwang ritual, is based on jungeum (中陰) belief, which spread from India to China, and unites the traditional funeral customs of baekilsang, sosang (小祥), and daesang (大祥). This takes place over the course of ten ceremonies. Moreover, in relation to the chilchiljae ritual, the saengchiljae ritual for performing yeoksu (逆修 or 先修), a folk custom and rite for making offerings to the Buddha before death, has also been performed. During the Song Dynasty, gigo (寄庫) belief was formed from the combination of yesu (預修) belief, which was an offshoot of siwang belief, as well as the belief that if one burns a paper note at a funeral the deceased can use that note in the afterlife. Through the combination of belief and ritual, people came to prepare for the afterlife in their present lives by burning paper notes to be used after death. In this way, in Chinese Taoist yesujae jaecho (預修齋醮) ritual after the reign of Emperor Lizong, Taoism and Buddhism entered into a process of negotiation, and yesu belief became widespread in civilian society, changing from an exclusively religious practice to become a common folk custom. |
