Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do is located in the mid to downstream of the Bukhangang River and the Namhangang river. Many remains from the prehistoric era have been found as it has formed fertile alluvial land, providing advantageous conditions for people to live. Yongmunsan Mountain sits in the middle of Yangpyeong-gun and has been divided into Yanggeun and Jipyeong for a long period of time. Yongmunsan Mountain is located on the border, looks down on the entire county, and stretches its branches in all directions. The 『Geography Section of the Annals of King Sejong (世宗實錄地理志) 』 records, ‘Yongmunsan Mountain stands on the east side of the county and extends to the western border of Jipyeong(砥平: one of two regions that formed Yangpyeong).’ Yongmunsan Mountain is a noted mountain where Yongmunsa temple, the historied temple that won the king’s favor. Painters could not pass by but produced many works relating to it. In Yongmunsan Mountain, Yangpyeong, ten Buddhist remains, including the temples currently operated mainly around the mountain, were identified. Geography books and town chronicles from the Joseon Dynasty identify at most seven temples and three new temple sites were found. The area around Yongmunsan Mountain includes traditional temples including Yongmunsa Temple, Sanasa Temple, Sangwonsa Temple, and Borisa Temple Site (currently Seonunsa Temple) and ruined temple sites including Yeonsurisa Temple Site and Yunpiram Temple Site. Recent survey of the area around Yongmunsan Mountain found Sinjeomrisa Temple Site 1, 2, and 3 and Yeonsu-ri Roof Tile Kiln Site. For it is possible to estimate when temples were established and closed based on the stone figures and relics found in Buddhist remains, the important Buddhist remains of the temples in Yongmunsan Mountain hold significant meanings in recovering ancient Buddhism and history. |
