摘要
본 논문은 석우 보화(石友 普化, 1875~1958)의 생애와 사상 등을 살펴보고자 하는 글이다. 그는 대표적인 금강산 불교 출신의 고승이었다. 그는 일의일발(一衣一鉢)수행의 가풍을 지키며, 금강산 마하연사와 영원암 등에서 치열하게 참선수행을 하였다. 스님은 은사에 대한 효심이 지극하였고, 자비와 지계(持戒)로 대중을 제도하여 ‘금강산 양반 스님’, ‘절집 안의 재상’이라고 하였다. 1955년 8월 12일, 전국 승려대회에서 만장일치로 초대 종정에 추대되었다. 동화사 문중의 근원을 이룩한 큰스님이며, 현재 조계종 종정 진제의 은사이다. 그러나 그가 입적한 지 63년이 지난 현재까지 스님의 생애와 사상에 대한 연구는 전혀 이루어지지 않았다. 그러므로 본 논문의 목적은 수행자들은 물론 일반인들의 사표가 될 스님의 생애와 사상을 조명해 봄으로써, 그의 올곧은 사상과 수행이 앞으로 한국 불교의 발전에 초석이 되고자 함이다.
This paper aims to examine the life and thoughts of Seokwoo Bohwa(1875-1958). He was a venerable monk who practiced asceticism at several temples at Mount Kumgang. In keeping with the tradition of performing ileui-ilbal(一衣一鉢), he fiercely practiced zen meditation at Mahayeonsa and Yeongwonam at Mount Kumgang. Seokwoo was very devoted to his teachers, and he blessed the public with his mercy and discipline and go on to be called the “Nobleman Monk of Mount Kumgang” and “a premier in the temple.” On August 12, 1955, he was unanimously selected as the first Chief priest at the National Monks’ Congress. He was a great monk who established the foundation of the Donghwasa and is now Jingje’s teacher, Chief priest of Jogye Order. Sixty-three years after his death, no studies have been conducted on Seokwoo’s life and thoughts. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to find out Seokwoo’s life and ideas. These will become a guide for the public as well as performers, so that his upright ideas and practices will be the foundation for the development of Korean Buddhism. I hope this paper will lead to more research on Seokwoo.
