| 摘要 | ‘근대 서구 문헌학’이자 ‘근대 서구 동양학’으로서 출발한 ‘근대 서구 불교학’은 우리나라를 비롯한 모든 불교학의 시초로서 그 속에는 서구 오리엔탈리즘의 시선과 한계가 내포되어있다. 따라서 불교학 자체의 고찰에 있어서는 문헌학이자 동양학으로서의 불교학에 대한 접근이 필요할 것이다. 이에 본고는 불교 연구 자체에 대한 고찰의 하나로, 근대 서구 불교학의 중심 역할을 한 프랑스의 동양학자들, 그들의 불교 연구 동향을 19세기 말 “국제 동양학자 학술회의”라고 하는 동양학회의 문헌연구 결과에 한정하여 고찰하고자 한다. 즉, 위 학술회의가 파리에서 처음 개최된 1873년부터 19세기 말에 열린 11회 학술회의까지 해당 학회에 참석한 동양학자들의 불교 연구 발표문을 개괄함으로써, 당대 서구 동양학자들의 불교 연구 동향을 살펴보고, 특히 프랑스 동양학자들의 발표문을 자세히 읽음으로써, 당대 서구 속 프랑스의 동양학과 불교학의 문헌학적 특징을 구체적인 사례를 통해 확인, 그 의의를 생각하는 것이 본고의 방향이자 내용이다. 본고의 고찰 대상인 “국제 동양학자 학술회의”의 국제학회로서의 성격이 동양학과 불교학에 있어서 서구 내 프랑스의 좌표를 가늠하게 해주는 것이다. 그리고 본고의 고찰이 19세기 말로 한정되는 이유는 19세기 말에 프랑스 동양학의 일부로 태동하게 되는 프랑스 한국학의 좌표 설정을 준비하는 것이 본고의 또 다른 목표인 데 있다. This study's object is to read the Buddhist Studies of the french orientalists in the late 19th century. We especially try to reveal the Buddhist Studies in the ‘Congrès international des orientalistes / Internaional Congress of Orientalists’. The Buddhist Studies of the modern western society is the Oriental Studies of the modern western society and the modern western philology. Therefore there is the orientalist and imperialistic viewpoint in the original Buddhist Studies. It is therefore important that we have the consciousness of the western angle and its representations in the western Buddhist Studies. But we have the consciousness of the virtue of the text analysis in the western and modern Buddhist Studies, which is revealed as regards the french Buddhist Studies in this paper. |
