This paper aims to examine the anxiety(uddhacca, auddhatya) from the COVID-19 pandemic situation and to seek a solution from the perspective of ‘four kinds of investigation(paryeṣaṇa)’ included in Yogācāra Buddhist meditation. The discussion began with examining the meaning and name of anxiety in Buddhist scriptures and how anxiety can be ceased through practice. Subsequently, the process of resolving anxiety was analyzed based on ‘four kinds of investigation(paryeṣaṇa).’ Next, the modern significance of it was reviewed by comparing with the ‘decentering’ of modern psychology. The results of this discussion are as follows. First, the anxiety, which is classified into one of five hindrances(nīvaraṇa) or ten fetters(samyojana), is expressed as uddhacca or uddhacca-kukkucca in the early Buddhist text. In addition, it is said that the final goal of meditation is accomplished by the complete removal of uddhacca. In abhidharma, it is described that the anxiety(skt. auddhatya), one of the afflictions(kleśa), makes the mind not stable and it is a powerful factor that hinders Buddhist meditation as seen in early Buddhism. Even in Yogācāra Buddhist text, the anxiety is defined as the affliction that disturbs the mind and as an obstacle to meditation. Especially, it is noteworthy that the anxiety is considered as one of the psychological phenomena(caitasika) arising in the mind(citta) and it can be controlled by virtuous mental factors(kuśala-caitasa) such as equanimity (upekṣa). Second, ‘four kinds of investigation’ refers to observing correctly that the image in the mind, the name expressing it, the characteristics of that itself, and the discriminated image by one’s desire are not eternal. That meditation is the way to see correctly the following such that anxiety is only an emotion, the event that causes anxiety is only itself, the original appearance of events that cause anxiety is not a substance, and differentiating those events from others is only constructed by language. It is said that by that meditation, everyone is able to realize that both the language that expresses anxiety and the nature of the event are not substances. Third, ‘decentering’ in western psychology refers to an ability to objectively see the event. That can be said to be similar to ‘four kinds of investigation’ in that seeing the mind as it is(self-acceptance), separating the fact from the thought that interpreted it(dis-identification), and weakening the hardened negative pattern(de-automation). But, ‘four kinds of investigation’ is different from the ‘decentering’ in that it is able to fundamentally change the mind by |
