Duhkha, one of the most important concepts of Buddhism, is a concept that is difficult to faithfully convey its original meaning to modern people. Duhkha contains essential aspects of existence that cannot be explained by words that refer to negative experiences of everyday life such as pain and suffering. In this respect, pain, suffering, unsatisfactoriness, and unhappiness, which are used as translations of duhkha, do not convey the comprehensive scope and functional aspects of duhkha well. The meanings of ‘work hard’, ‘hard’, ‘toil’, and ‘try’ of duhkha have a negative dysfunctional meaning and a positive functional meaning of maintaining life. On the other hand, the word stress, which is recently used as a translation of Duhkha in the English-speaking world, not only adequately explains the essence of duhkha originating from the grasping with impermanence and selflessness, but also effectively conveys the Buddhist view of ‘everything is duhkha’. It encompasses the range of dukkha-dukkha, vipariṇama-dukkha, and samkhāra-dukkha in terms of distress, eustress, and stress. In addition, stress encompasses good stress and bad stress, thus simultaneously revealing the dysfunction and positive function of duhkha. In addition, it can be said that stress is consistent with the range of meanings of samkhāra-dukkha in the sense that it reveals the ontological characteristics of all beings. |
