摘要
본 논문은 최근에까지 일본 학계에서 진행된 불교의례 관련 연구동향에 대해 알아보고, 그러한 연구가 이루어진 배경과 축적된 연구 결과물을 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본문에서는 일본의 불교의례 관련 연구동향을 크게 죽음의례와 사원의 법회의례, 그리고 의례이론 연구의 세 영역으로 나누어 서술했다. 첫 번째 죽음의례 관련 연구에서는 상장례를 포괄하는 임종행의(臨終行儀), 망혼들에 대한 천도의식인 시아귀(施餓鬼), 생전의 왕생의식인 역수(逆修)의 세 항목으로 나누어 정리했다. 첫 번째 죽음과 천도 관련 의례에서는 기존의 장례불교가 사회의 변화로 인해 서서히 도전에 부딪치게 되면서 관련 의례연구 역시 시대적 변화를 반영하는 현상을 보여준다. 두 번째 사원의 법회의례에서는 불교의례가 세속화되면서 민간사회에까지 확장되는 현상인 불교민속, 법회에서 행해지는 불교음악의 연주와 성명(聲明; 범패), 각 종단별 사원제도와 법회 등으로 세분화하여 살펴보았다. 특히 불교민속 연구는 사원에서 특정 기일에 행해지는 법회나, 수행의례 등이 민간사회로까지 확장·수용되면서 점차 세속화되는 현상을 반영하고 있다. 세 번째, 의례이론 연구에서는 불교의례에 관한 역사학적/사회학적/문화인류학적 연구들을 비롯하여, 의례연구의 방법론을 구축하기 위해 시도하는 연구들을 찾아보았다. 이러한 일본불교 의례연구의 데이터를 수집·분석한 자료들은 한국의 불교의례 연구자들에게도 참고할만한 연구 대조군으로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.
This essay examines research trends within Japanese academia regarding studies on Buddhist ritual. This essay seeks to explain the background and contributions of these studies. In this essay, I categorize research trends on Japanese Buddhist ritual into the three following categories: research on death rituals, research on Buddhist temple rituals, and research on ritual theory. Within research on death rituals, I further categorize research into studies on death and dying rituals (imjong haengŭi), which includes funeral rights; rituals for offering food to ghosts (siagwi), which are meant to help deceased sprits ascend to a higher realm; and Buddhist rituals to ensure one’s happiness in the afterworld (yŏksu), which are performed before one dies. First, in rituals related to death and helping deceased spirits, it can be observed that as Buddhist funeral rites gradually faced challenges due to societal change, and research on rituals also came to reflect these changes. Second, in research on Buddhist temple rituals, I examine the spread of Buddhist folklore into civil society alongside the secularization of Buddhist ritual and the performance and chanting style of Buddhist music performed at Buddhist services. I also survey each temple system and Buddhist service according to monastic order. In particular, research on Buddhist folklore demonstrates that as Buddhist services and rituals that are held on certain days have become more commonplace in civil society, they have become more secularized. Third, regarding research on the theory of ritual, I examine research―including historical, sociological, and cultural anthropological research―that attempts to establish a methodology for studying the theory of ritual. I believe that this this study, which collects and analyses various studies on ritual in Japanese Buddhism, will prove to be a valuable resource for researchers of Korean Buddhist ritual.
