| 摘要 | In Hindu Pluralism: Religion and the Public Sphere in Early Modern South India, author Elaine M. Fisher delivers a thought-provoking and meticulously researched study on the formations of Hindu identities in the early modern period, particularly in Tamil-speaking South India, the implications of which extend throughout the Indian subcontinent. Through expert exegesis of Sanskrit, Tamil, and Telegu archives, the author demonstrates how the emergence of various Hindu publics and public intellectuals created a pluralistic context in which the differing sects of Hinduism could be united in a “multicentric negotiation of power, identity, and truth” (194). For this purpose, the author focuses on the emergence of the Smārta-Śaiva sectarian theology, especially on the renowned theologian Nīlakaṇṭha Dīkṣita, who served in the court of Tirumalai Nāyaka in Madurai in the seventeenth century CE. The central and guiding framework of Hindu Pluralism, which is made explicit in both the introduction and the conclusion, is “to excavate the emic genealogy of Hindu sectarianism” in order to demonstrate “that it did not fragment a primordial whole but was the primary vehicle for the earliest expressions of Hinduism as a unified religion” (5). While there has been an ongoing scholarly discussion about the origins of a unified “Hinduism” and its attendant identities since the early 1990s, Fisher approaches the question of Hinduism through the methodology of (public) intellectual history that yields a valuable perspective for understanding how disparate philosophical, devotional, and sectarian traditions came to be considered part of one broader phenomenon. That is, through the emergence of sectarian theology during the early modern period being “Hindu” became possible as intersectarian debates defined its parameters. |
