The Zen Culture of the Southern Song Dynasty, brought in by the Zen masters Eisai and Dogen during the Kamakura period, promoted Buddhist architecture and all Japanese Cultures. The tea culture among others continued into the Muromachi period as a sumptuous and luxurious one. Yoshimasa Ashikaga, the 8th Shogun of the Shogunate, asked Murada Shuko for a new tea ceremony. It led to creation of the Choam tea house and the Choam ceremony characterized by their simplicity. It can be said to originated from the song of Choam (草庵歌, The Song of the Grass Hut) by the Zen master, Shitou Xiqian (石頭 希遷, 700~790) in the Tang dynasty, which is a paean to a life of secluded meditation. Accordingly, this writing considers the character and identity of the space around the tea culture in the Muromachi period by analyzing the symbolic meaning of the monastery with seven assorted subsidiary Halls of a Zen temple, which the Choam tea house and the Roji (露地, the courtyard attached to the tea house) has. This seems to have led to the Choam Tea Ceremony, along with the Choam Tea Ceremony, as a result of the spirit of the Zen Master, Ikkyu from Daedeoksa Temple, who tried to keep the pure Zen in ‘the system of ten temples in five mountains’ in which they place not an apprentice of its head monk but an eminent monk as the head monk of the temple. The Choam tea house and the Roji was created by Murada Shuko, Takenojoo, Senrikyu and Furuta Oribe. Their structure, meaning and function are very similar to those of the monastery with seven assorted subsidiary Halls in the Song Dynasty. The Roji has two or three doors in its outside and inside. These three doors have the same function and symbolic meaning as the mountain gate, the main one, and the middle one. Also, it has a stone bridge, a stone lantern, and a a stone mortar in and out, which arrangement is the same as that of the temple. In addition, the tea house also has a significant effect as it is given the symbolism of the Golden Hall (金堂), the the Dharma Hall, the Meditation Hall (僧堂), and Jungryo (衆寮). The Choam tea house and the Roji were made an example the zen temple. And the tea ceremony, which had the symbolic meaning of the temple, was inherited by tea people in Taitokuji Temple. From this point of view, we can say that the tea house and the Roji were built around Zen thought and passed down as a tradition. This seems to have the intention that the tea ceremony as the Zen practices would be brought to the worldly people as well. Thus, it can be seen that the secular people also practice meditation with the tea ceremony in the Choam tea house, which has the symbolism of the temple, |
