This is a research paper that examines introduction of Buddhism in Gaya area which was established in the south the Korean Peninsula in ancient times. Unlike introduction of Buddhism to the Korean Peninsula via China, Buddhism in Gaya is assumed to be introduced directly from India, not via China. The history of Gaya is recorded in the 『Samguk Yusa(Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms)』 compiled by Iryeon, and Gaya Buddhism is also believed to be introduced directly from India through Heo Hwang-Ok who moved from Ayodhya to Gaya by marriage. In regards to the introduction of Gaya Buddhism, this paper intends to examine focusing on the Gayasan Mountain out of Buddhist relics remaining in the area of Gaya. Gaya is ‘gayā’ in Sanskrit. ‘Gayā’ stands for a cow(牛). ‘Gayā’ is sometimes translated into Chinese(漢譯) as an elephant(象). The reason why ‘gayā’ is translated as cow and elephant is because it shares the same pronunciation(音) with Sanskrit ‘gaja’ that means an elephant. Through the original language of ‘gayā’ and translation into Chinese, it can be considered that Gayasan Mountain was called Udusan Mountain or Sangwangsan Mountain. Cow and elephant that mean Gaya are the animals related to Buddhism. Through Udusan Mountain and Sangwangsan Mountain, Gayasan Mountain can be considered a name of mountain originated from Buddhism. Eventually, Gayasan Mountain, the border area of Gaya is considered the name of mountain based on Gaya Buddhism. And through the historic sites inside Gayasan Mountain such as Chilbulbong(七佛峯) and Yeongji(影池: Reflection Pond), Gayasan Mountain is considered an area influenced by Gaya Buddhism. Through Gayasan Mountain, it can be considered that introduction of Buddhism to Gaya was influenced by Heo Hwang-Ok who got married and moved to Gaya at the time it was established.
