The incorporation of Sanskrit characters into wooden architecture in Korea started with the emergence of coffered ceiling structures in the sixteenth century. From the time of their first appearance in the country as an element of traditional decorative coloring (dancheong) and religious ornamentation, Sanskrit characters had already developed standardized forms. By the seventeenth century, Sanskrit characters were being widely incorporated into wooden architecture throughout the country. While inheriting the conventions from the previous century, the incorporation of Sanskrit characters into wooden architecture in the seventeenth century displayed new applications, such as on diverse types of ceiling panels and ornately decorated crown moldings. Accordingly, the seventeenth century is considered a key period in the development of the use of Sanskrit characters in wooden architecture. Daeungjeon Hall at Beomeosa Temple is a prime example of the seventeenth- century application of Sanskrit characters, which is marked by the establishment of traditions and the emergence of new styles. It is also significant in the history of Korean wooden architecture for its unique level of originality and identified date of repair (1658). This paper explores the styles and meanings of the Sanskrit characters incorporated into Daeungjeon Hall at Beomeosa Temple. It proposes that the hierarchical structure often seen in layered ceilings was applied to a great extent to the components of the coffered ceiling, including the inner beam boards, crown moldings, and ceiling panels, in an attempt to amplify the characteristics of the coffered ceiling. The paper suggests that the incorporation of Sanskrit characters into Daeungjeon Hall was an outcome of elaborate plans formulated through the organic relationships among the artisans since the hierarchical orders in the coffered ceiling (consisting of inner beam boards, crown moldings, and ceiling panels), Sanskrit character compositions, and traditional decorative coloring all appear carefully premeditated and are clearly intentional. |
