The purpose of this article is to materialize the basic understanding of the Early Buddhism through the ideological understanding of the early Buddhism merit transference. The merit transference is the attribution of the merits performed by oneself to one's own wisdom and others. The merit transference is known as a practical practice established by Buddhism to lead us to a comfortable life by pursuing goodness and guarding against evil. This idea implies the character of practical ethics to promote the welfare of oneself and others by giving merit transference to all beings without limiting the merits acquired as a result of one's practice to personal achievement. The Buddhism points out that the obstacles to the progress of our altruistic life are selfishness rooted in our strong desire to preserve ourselves and our obsession with the self, which regards the ethical life as self-sacrifice. According to Buddhism, there is no such thing as selfishness and altruism. It can be either selfishness or altruism, depending on what kind of action our heart directs. Therefore, Buddhism believes that one can change oneself and this world in a good direction through one's own efforts based on the autonomous nature of human beings. The early Buddhism merit transference is characterized by ethical understanding and practice that transforms one's inner self into a good character for a good life and strives to share that prosperity with others without being stingy to insist on one's own prosperity. In other words, it is an idea established with the goal of realizing a happy life for the purpose of common welfare by striving to recover the ethical mind of each individual and breaking down the boundaries between me and other beings. The critical mind of this article is about how virtue, the ideological basis of merit transference, prepares its foundation in the early Buddhism and develops merit transference. This article proceeded with the following problems as a task. First, it is the conceptual understanding of merit transference, which is the theoretical basis of virtue. In the early scriptures, we examined how the root and virtue were used, and on the other hand, by understanding the meaning of the combination of these two concepts, we examined the ideological basis of the early Buddhism merit transference. Second, it is a matter of limiting merit transference to the birth of heaven and the achievement of merit transference of individualism. This view seems to limit the nature of the early merit transference somewhat passively, so I looked closely at this issue from an ideological point of view and identified its active nature. Through this study, the meaning of this article is to present the fact that the merit of the early Buddhism is an active ethical guideline that reminds us that we can live only when we guide and comfort each other. |
