| 摘要 | 李晦明(1866∼1951)은 근대 불교교단의 중진으로서 다양한 각도에서 조명이 필요한 인물이지만 지금까지 크게 주목받지 못했다. 그는 건봉사 출신 승려로서 1900년대 이미 중앙 교단에서 활약했으며, 1920년대에는 본산 주지를 역임할 정도로 영향력이 있는 인물이었다. 특히 1900년대 초부터 1920년대까지 포교사로서 큰 명성을 얻었으며, 한반도 남단과 북단 지역의 불교계를 일신하는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이 글에서는 이회명의 행적 가운데, 1920년대 제주에서의 활동을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이회명은 조선불교의 전통적 신행과 근대적 포교방법을 제주도에 소개하여 1920년대 제주불교계에 큰 자극을 주었다. 1924년의 제주 관음사의 중창 낙성식 개최, 제주도 순회 포교, 계단의 설치, 신행단체의 조직 등 제주도의 포교 방식, 불교 의례의 관행에 변화를 가져왔다. 또한 제주불교협회 창립 등을 통해 제주불교의 사회적 위상과 권위를 제고하는데 큰 역할을 하였으며 그가 저술한 다수의 기문은 근대 제주불교 역사인식의 중요한 토대를 제공하였다. 이회명은 개화된 근대 불교인으로서, 지방의 불교교세를 진흥시킨 포교사로서, 불교사와 사찰의 역사에 정통한 승려이자 문장가로서 주목되어야 한다. 앞으로 심도 있는 입체적 탐구가 필요한 인물이라 할 수 있다. Lee Hoe-myeong has not been noticed until now, even though he played an important role in the modern Korean Buddhist order. He gained great reputation as a missionary from the early 1900s to the 1920s, and played a decisive role in reviving the weak Buddhist community in the southern and northern parts of the Korean Peninsula. This article examines the activities of Lee Hoe-myeong in Jeju in the 1920s. Lee Hoe-myeong resonated greatly with the Buddhist community in Jeju in the 1920s. He introduced the traditional practices of Joseon Buddhism and modern missionary project to Jeju Island, thereby transforming the Buddhist culture of Jeju. It also played a major role in enhancing the social status and authority of Jeju Buddhism. Many of his writings on Jeju Buddhism provided an important foundation for modern Buddhist historical awareness. Lee Hoe-myeong is a figure whose status should be noted in Jeju Buddhist history. In addition, as a modern Buddhist, a missionary with extensive activities, and a writer with Buddhist history and temple history, research is needed. |
