김구는 일제의 압제에 항거한 위대한 인물이다. 한국인이 존경하는 위인을 꼽을 때면 언제나 선두에 자리 잡는다. 이처럼 한민족의 위인이 젊은 날 마곡사로 출가하였다는 사실은 불교계의 커다란 긍지가 될 만하다. 비록 1년이라는 짧은 기간이었으나 불교는 오갈 데 없는 도망자 김구에게 안식처를 제공하였다. 그러나 김구의 꿈과 뜻은 따로 있었다. 마곡사 생활을 6개월 여 만에 끝냈지만 그는 이때 값진 깨달음을 얻었다. 젊은 날 상놈의 껍질을 벗고, 월등한 양반이 되어 평범한 양반에게 당해 온 오랜 원한을 갚고자 하였다. 그러나 이는 불교에서는 추호도 용납할 수 없는 악마와 같은 생각이고, 젊은 날의 영웅심과 공명심에 불과하였다고 자각하였다. 중국으로 건너가 27년 동안 독립운동을 전개하는 과정에서 김구는 불교계의 도움을 받았다. 승려의 신분으로 임시정부가 조직한 무장독립운동에 투신하는 이가 적지 않았고, 본산의 주지를 하면서도 비밀리에 독립자금을 보내는 인물이 속출하였다. 김구와 불교계의 인연은 독립운동의 과정에서 계속 이어졌다. 이 과정에서 한용운과 이종욱은 김구와 직접적인 인연을 맺었다. 김구는 한용운에게 밀사를 보내 긴밀히 독립운동을 전개하였고, 이종욱의 독립자금을 전해 받았다. 그동안 김구의 출가 사실에 관해서는 자주 언급되어 왔으나 구체적인 출가 배경과 환속 과정 등에 관해서는 종합적인 이해가 없었다. 김구와 불교와의 인연을 상세히 살펴보고, 불교 정신이 그에게 어떻게 작용하였는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 나아가 독립운동의 전개과정에서 그가 불교계와 어떻게 연결되었는가를 한용운, 이종욱과의 관계를 통해 이해하였다.
Kim Koo(1876∼1949) is a great person who has protested against Japanese oppression. If he chooses a respectable person for a Korean, he always stands at the forefront. In 1896 he killed a Japanese lieutenant, Tsuchida, at Chihapo Port, in order to avenge the murder of the Queen Myeongseong. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death. Kim Koo after escaping from prison in 1898, he entered the Buddhist priesthood at Magok-Sa Temple and was ordained a Buddhist monk. However, in 1899, he quitted the priesthood and returned to secular life, where he exerted himself in educational activities and established several schools in Hwanghae-do Province. Kim Koo was exiled to Shanghai, China. As the Police Bureau Commissioner, Minister of Internal Affairs, and Premier of the Korean Provisional Government, he strove to enliven the KPG amidst the difficulties of the times. In the process of the independence movement for 27 years, he received many Buddhist support. Han Yong-woon and Lee Jong-wook made a direct connection with Kim Koo. he sent a courier to Han Yong-woon to develop the independence movement and received Lee Jong-wook's independent funds. In the meantime, it has often been mentioned about the fact that Kim Koo's buddhist monk, but there is no comprehensive understanding about the background of the buddhist life and the process of the leave the temple. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between Kim Koo and Buddhism in detail and to see how the spirit of Buddhism affected him. In addition, how he connected with the Buddhist in the process of the independence movement through the relationship with Han Yong-woon and Lee Jong-wook.
