| 摘要 | 본 연구는 한국 불교의 발전과 지금의 대한불교조계종이 있기까지 가장 중요한 부분인 불교 포교 전승의 역사를 고찰하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 현대 한국 불교 포교사의 중심에 있으면서 핵심적인 역할을 수행한 분이 무진장 대종사이다. 무진장 대종사는 한국 불교 정화운동과 더불어 성립된 대한불교조계종에 포교원을 설립하고 강석주 큰스님의 뒤를 이어 포교원장이 되었다. 이후 법사를 선발하고 전국 각지의 사찰에 포교사를 보내어 설법하게 하는 등 전국적으로 국민을 상대로 한 본격적인 포교운동을 주도하였다. 한국 불교 정화운동의 3대 이념이자 목표인 역경, 도제 양성, 포교 중에서 포교는 불법을 널리 전하여 대중의 삶을 더욱 풍요롭고 청정하게 만드는 중요한 과업이다. 한국 불교에 주어진 이 막중한 과제의 수행에 서원을 두고 앞장서서 실천하였던 분이 무진장 대종사였다. 이는 곧 한국 불교의 정통성을 회복하고 교단의 존재성과 권위를 확립하기 위한 노력이기도 했다. This paper intends to study the history about the propagation and transmission of Buddhism, the basis of the establishment of the present Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism as well as the Korean Buddhism’s development. First of all, it is Mujinjang Great Patriarch who occupied the central position to play a key role in the modern Korean Buddhism propagation history. He established the Bureau of Missionary Affairs in the Jogye Order resulted from the Korean Buddhism Purification Movement, and then was inaugurated the Director of the Bureau as a successor of Chief Abbot Gang Seok-joo. Since then, he initiated the propagation activities that targeted the whole nation in earnest including the selection of Dharma instructors, and dispatch of missionaries to temples across the country for the preaching. Three major ideas and goals of the Korean Buddhism Purification Movement are the translations of the sutras, fostering the disciples, and propagation. Among them, the last one is the significant task that spreads the Buddha-dharma far and wide, thereby making the public’s life more abundant and clean. For the execution of this tremendous responsibility given to Korean Buddhism, Mujinjang vowed to practice as a leader. Consequently, this was the effort to restore the authenticity of Korean Buddhism, and, further, establish the presence and authority of the order. |
