| 摘要 | The development of compassion and friendship should be not only towards all living beings but also towards every small and big plants in our environment. The Buddha was born under a tree in the beautiful forest of Lumbini. He attained enlightenment under a tree in the forest of Bodh Gaya. The first Turning Wheel of Dharma was also performed under a tree. His great Nirvāṇa (passing away) was occurred under two trees. Four important events related to the life of the Buddha are related to the environment itself. The Buddha’s instructions to the monks and nuns in the Vinaya Piṭka of the Tripitaka have been to be environmentally friendly including personal hygiene to stay healthy. He said that natural resources should be used only for basic needs without exploiting the environment. The Buddha said in the Aggañña sutta of the Dīghā Nikāya that the destruction of the environment and existence of human beings can be occurred due to the great desire of man. Even though the Buddha did not preach separately on the environment, it is clear that the concept of his teachings was environment friendly. |
