| 摘要 | Buddhism emerged in Magadha in Central India in the 6th century B.C. in a society of multi-religious faiths and dogmatic philosophies resulting in the embracement of Buddhism by a multitude of people of all the classes in Bhārata. Buddhism was officially introduced to other countries from the 3rd century B.C. Thus, Buddhism gradually spread in the Southern regions as well as in the Northern regions of the world forming different schools and sects in different cultural contexts where Buddhism came to be termed as two prominent traditions - Theravāda and Mahāyāna. According to Nalinaksha Dutt, (Spread of Buddhism), the successful spread of Buddhism in Bhārata society at the time of the Buddha was due to several prominent factors. i. The Great Personality of the Buddha. ii. Unsurpassed dedication of the Buddha’s Noble Disciples. iii. Flexibility of Buddha’s Doctrine. iv. Royal patronage. v. Contribution of lay patrons and patronesses. Among the above factors that led to successful socialization of Buddhism, flexibility of the Buddha’s doctrine and the tolerance of other religious faiths by the Buddha are salient factors. This unprecedented uniqueness in the history of religions can be identified in a certain aspect as syncretism with regard to the socialization of Buddhism in India as well as in foreign lands. Therefore, the main objective of this essay is to make a critical study of the syncretism theory adopted by the Buddha in the socialization of Buddhist teachings in India and a brief introduction to the localization of Buddhism in other countries through syncretism by the wise Therās many years after the Great Demise of the Buddha. |
