| 摘要 | Buddhist Sangha consists of four group of peoples called Pariṣadas they are; Bhikṣhus, Bhikṣhunis, Upāsakas and Upāsikās. They can also be called group of renounced and householders, both devoted their life in a Buddhist way. They are the integral entity or components of Buddhism. The history of Buddhist community of householder called dvevācīka Upāsakas named Tapassu and Bhallika. The Bhikṣhu Saṇgha started with first dharma discourse on Ŗsipatana Mṛīgadāvana for Pañca Bhadravargīya. Venuvaṇa vihāra donated by King Bimbisāra of Magadha could be the first vihāra in history of Buddhism. These are places used by the renouncers to take shelter and practise the dharma discourses. The tradition of donating Vihāra persists by believing it as a pious deed for gathering merit by the Buddhists. Early mention of the vihāra like Chārumati and Guṃvihāra testify the existence of vihāra tradition some three centuries after Mahāparinirvāna of omniscient Buddha in Nepal. The priority given to Buddhist vihāra during Licchavi period is worthy enough to understand the presence of Buddhist Sangha at that time. The existing vihāras in Nepal maṇḍala, better known as Mahāvihāra in Sanskrit are believed to be of Transitional period (900-1200 AD) and medieval period (1200- 1769 AD). The widely popular and synonymous term is monastery for vihāra. The activities including various rite and rituals play vital role in the sustenance and preservation of culture in Nepal maṇḍala. |
