| 摘要 | Conventionally, the Mahāyāna tradition is believed to have come into existence around the first century A.D. The Mahāyāna sūtras are the sources of the Mahāyāna tradition. Mahayanists assert that the source of the Mahāyāna sūtras is the Buddha himself. They argue that the Buddha taught his dharma according to the different mental capacities, propensities and natures of beings. Hence, when the Buddha taught his teachings, only Nāgas and gods were able to comprehend the Mahāyāna teachings and they preserved them until prominent Buddhist scholars such as Nāgārjuna and Asaṅga etc., brought them back to the human realm. In this paper, I shall explore the evolution of Mahāyāna Buddhism and analyze how scholars in the past and in modern times see this development. Since this is a textual based research, my main resources for this paper are Tibetan texts, especially Chojung [dharma-history], while secondary emphasis is put on other relevant sources. |
