| 摘要 | Swayambhu is a well known Buddhist monument in Nepal, equally popular among foreigners too and is an important world heritage site. It is situated atop a hillock in the western side of Kathmandu valley. The hillock is covered by forest with flocks of monkeys. That is why foreigners named it the monkey temple. A long tiresome stone stairway leads to the top where a colossal stupa stood in the centrealong with other temple shrines and stone caityas in the surrounding. The Stupa, known as the Mahacaitya (meaning the great caitya) looks elegant with massive white painted earthen dome, gilded 13 tiered pinnacle based upon rectangular harmika with a pair of painted compassionate Buddha’s eyes in four cardinal sides. There are a lot of things to mention. The objective of this article is not to describe physical features of Swayambhu and glorify it, but to reveal the underlying meaning and philosophy concerning Swayambhu. |
