| 摘要 | During his long residency in the United States in the 1950s, Suzuki lived mostly in New York teaching at Columbia University. Shortly before he moved back to Japan in November, 1958, he was also able to spend seven months in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He did so after resigning from Columbia in 1957 to accept an appointment as a member of the newly created Zen Studies Society, which supported him as a researcher and translator. This freed Suzuki to join his decades-long friend and fellow Zen specialist Hisamatsu Shin’ichi 久松真一 (1889–1980), a retired professor of Kyoto University, who was teaching at Harvard Divinity School in the fall of 1957. During their months together they met frequently to confer on Zen, and they collaborated on presentations at Harvard and in Washington, DC. While in Cambridge, Suzuki made final revisions for the publication of his Zen and Japanese Culture (1959) and for Zen Buddhism and Psychoanalysis (1960), and he occasionally lectured at nearby colleges and universities. He also did research on projects for the Zen Studies Society. Here he is shown reading the important Song 宋 dynasty (960–1279) Zen text Keitoku dentō roku 景徳伝灯録 (Record of the Transmission of the Lamp). |
