대승경전인 『법화경』은 현재까지도 불자들에게 널리 신행되고 있다. 『법화경』을 기저(基底)에 둔 법화신행에서 치유의 의미는 좁게는 질병 치유를 의미하며 넓게는 심적 안정과 그에 따른 삶의 태도를 포함한다. 『법화영험전』은 고려 말 요원(了圓)에 의해 찬술되어 온전히 전해지고 있다. 법화신행을 행한 결과인 사례로서의 『법화영험전』은 신행자에게 신비한 영험의 체험임과 동시에 치유효과이기도 하다. 이런 치유효과를 심리적 치유와 육체적 치유로 나누어 논의하고자 한다. 심리적 치유는 심신 안정에 해당되는 사례이고 육체적 치유는 병고나 고통을 해결하는 사례이다. 불교에는 고통을 자각하고 이를 해소하기 위한 여러 수행법이 있으며 경전 수행도 이에 해당된다. 『법화경』의 수행법으로 ‘오종법사행’이 있으며 이러한 법화신행 결과의 모음이 『법화영험전』이다. 『법화영험전』의 영험사례를 치유적으로 분석한 결과, 심리적 치유와 육체적 치유는 전체 118편 가운데 절반 이상을 차지했다. 또한 신이(神異)나 상서(祥瑞)를 드러내는 사례의 비중도 많았다. ‘오종법사행’을 신행한 수행 자체는 공덕행으로서 법화신행 자체가 복덕문(福德門)과 화타문(化他門)과 보은문(報恩門)이 되므로 치유의 근거가 되는 것이다. 『법화영험전』의 치유사례를 『법화경』의 경설(經說) 내용과 비교한 결과 상당히 유사했다. 이는 법화신행에 있어서 『법화영험전』의 치유효과가 『법화경』의 경설 내용과 다르지 않음을 드러내며, 『법화영험전』을 바라보는 시각이 설화적인 이해보다는 치유적으로 해석할 수 있음을 시사한다. 치유적 접근은 심리 프로그램으로서 기초적 근거로 사용될 수 있다. 법화신행을 통한 치유효과로서 『법화경』 보급과 신행을 기대한다.
The Lotus Sutra, one of Mahayana sutras, is still widely believed and practised among Buddhists. In Beophwa practice based on the Lotus Sutra, healing means curing diseases in a narrow sense and it includes the attitude of life resulted from mental stabilization in a broad sense. Beophwa-yeongheomjeon compiled by Yowon in the late Goryeo Dynasty has been handed down in its entirety to the present. Beophwa-yeongheomjeon, as the collection of the results after following Beophwa practice, shows mysterious spiritual experiences as well as healing effects to its believers. This paper aims to discuss its healing effects with respect to psychological healing and physical healing. Psychological healing represents cases of mental and physical stability, and physical healing describes examples of treating illness or eliminating suffering. Buddhism has various practices to be aware of suffering and to solve it, and sutra practice is also one of them. There are five practices of a dharma teacher in the Beophwa practice of the Lotus Sutra and Beophwa-yeongheomjeon is the collection of its practice results. As a result of the analysis of spiritual experiences listed in Beophwa-yeongheomjeon from the therapeutic viewpoint, psychological healing and physical healing accounted for more than half out of 118 pieces in total. There were also lots of cases revealing supramundane experiences or auspicious events. The practice following ‘five practices of a dharma teacher’ itself is a meritorious deed and Beophwa practice becomes the gate to fortune and virtue, the gate to edification and the gate to gratitude. Therefore it becomes the basis of the healing. As a result of comparing healing cases of Beophwa-yeongheomjeon with the content of teachings of the Lotus Sutra, both turned out to be remarkably similar. This shows that in terms of Beophwa practice, healing effect of Beophwa-yeongheomjeon was not different from the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and suggests that the viewpoint looking at Beophwa-yeongheomjeon could be interpreted in a therapeutic way rather than understanding it as folk tales. Therapeutic approach can be used as a basis for psychological programs. This study looks forward to the spread and practice of the Lotus Sutra to have healing effect through Beophwa practice.
