| 摘要 | Throughout the phase of time cycle, Buddhism continues to intrigue with its multi-facets, which is also a witness to the diversity of its paths and means based on the capacity and aptitude of individuals. However, the essence of Buddhism is singular and that is to benefit all sentient being. But the methods and means have largely varied depending on the ideology of the different vehicles which is actually based on the capacity and aptitude of individuals. The Theravada school can be largely associated with the fundamental precept of not harming others where as the Mahayana or “The Greater Vehicle” can be associated with the percept of helping others through altruistic mind or the Bodhichitta that aspires for the enlightenment of others before oneself or one’s enlightenment for the sake of other sentient beings. The Vajrayana or the Diamond Vehicle, which stresses on the esoteric teachings of Buddhism, involves transmission of knowledge through elaborate secret formulas(mantra), gestures(mudra), and diagrams(mandala) as a key to realization from master to pupil in an unbroken chain of transmission, and this is where artistic realizations play an important role. In this paper I will try to establish how Buddhist arts go beyond the realm of mundane art which is normally the result of human aesthetic creativity. I will try to explore the purpose and intent of Buddhist arts as a reflection of Buddhist thoughts, practices and values and how they try to express the indescribable experience of enlightenment. |
