| 摘要 | Abstract The Sacred Garden of Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha is one of the consecrated places for the Buddhist from a very early period. After the death of the Buddha it became an important site for Buddhist pilgrimage near and far, witnessing a continuous flow of people who came with faith and devotion, seeking purification of their mind. The garden of Lumbini is a timeless place where ancient monuments mark the authenticity of the birthplace. The pilgrims from the earliest time to the present moment are deeply affected by its spiritual atmosphere. The monuments erected by them and the record of noteworthy visits add earnestness to the sacred site. The religious confusion of medieval times brought damage and neglect to Buddhist sacred places of pilgrimage, and for five hundred years (till 19th century) Lumbini was lost to the history. The association of Lumbini with the Buddha was slowly forgotten. But the Buddha’s great message survived, growing in importance through the centuries. The Physical Development of Lumbini The pilgrimage of the then Secretary General of the United Nations the late U Thant to Lumbini in 1967 became another milestone in the history of the physical development of Lumbini. U Thant deeply impressed by Lumbini’s sanctity believed Lumbini should be a place where religious and secular leaders could work together to create a world free from hunger strife and can be an international pilgrimage and tourism center. U Thant called upon the international community to come forward to help Lumbini and the response was enthusiastic. A thirteen-nation International Committee for the Development of Lumbini was formed in 1970 in New York. In 1972 Prof. Kenzo Tange (the world-famous architect from Japan), was awarded consultancy for the preparation of the Master Plan for the development of Lumbini by United Nations and after six years preparation in 1978 the Master Plan of Lumbini was finalized and approved by the UN and Government of Nepal. The Master Plan The strong and clear-cut Master Plan transforms three square miles of flat and empty land into an expression of the Buddha’s universal message of peace and compassion, creating a sculpted landscape to make his teachings accessible to all of humanity. The Master Plan provides a seat of learning and a place to experience the spirit of Buddhism. The plan has multi-dimensional aspects. It has the task not only of building up of the area but also of restoring religious sites or shrines, and of uncovering historical and archaeology facts as well. The Sacred Garden The Sacred Garden area is designed with the objective to create an atmosphere of peace, tranquility, universality and clarity consistent with the idea of the Buddha, is the heart of the design and lies in the south section of the Master Plan. The Sacred Garden shelters ancient monuments, Asoka pillar at its center and the restored atmosphere of plant life around the ancient ruins with peaceful and lush forest and water body surrounding the complex. The tranquil and undisturbed beauty of it's plants life creates a reverent atmosphere where one can experience the Buddha's universal message. The Sacred Garden is the focal point of the Master Plan to symbolize the birthplace of the Buddha. The form of circle enclosing squares in an expression of purity and simplicity, the two aspects of Buddhism. This Sacred Garden is main site to the pilgrims and visitors to pay homage to the Buddha and his teaching. The Marker Stone which pinpoints the exact birth spot of the Buddha, the Nativity Sculpture telling the story of the Buddha's birth, the Asoka Pillar authenticates the Buddha's birthplace Lumbini, the stupas and monasteries erected by the devotees to confirm their nearness and reverend the place. Every year thousands of pilgrims and visitors pay their homage to the birthplace of the Buddha. Every individual/group of Buddhist, Buddhist communities/pilgrims/v |
