경봉선사의 사상적 교류 고찰 -보조국사, 한암선사와 용성선사를 중심으로=An Inquiry into Ideological Exchange of Seon Master Gyeong-bong(鏡峰) -with the National Master Bojo, Seon Master Han-am and Yong-seong as the central figure-

대한민국 근현대 선지식으로 알려진 경봉선사(1892~1982)의 사상적 배경을 보조국사의 선사상 계승과 한암선사, 용성선사와의 사상적 교류 측면으로 살펴보고자 한다. 경봉스님(이하 ‘스님’생략)의 선사상(禪思想) 중 평상심시도(平常心是道)라는 부분을 『보조사상』 30호에서 논자가 밝힌바 있다. 본 논문은 그것을 바탕으로 보조국사의 선교일치라는 측면과 한암과 용성과는 오후보임(悟後保任) 측면에서 살펴보았고, 보조는 선과 교가 서로 계합되는 전거를 찾기 위해 노력하던 중, 이통현(625~730)의 『신화엄론』을 근거로 ‘佛이 입으로 말한 것은 敎요, 조사가 마음에 전한 것은 禪’으로 선과 교가 별개가 아니라 하나라고 하였다. 이와 더불어 한암과 용성, 그리고 경봉의 삶에서 알 수 있듯이 선과 교를 하나로 보고 있음을 찾을 수 있다. 한암은 참선수행 중에도 항상 경전과 어록을 가까이 하였고 용성 역시 『육조단경』과 『전등록』을 열람하였다. 경봉은 선사이면서도 『화엄경』을 강설하는 법회인 화엄산림법회를 개설하여 용맹정진하던 중 크게 깨닫게 된다. 한암과 용성, 그리고 경봉은 오후보임에 대하여 서로 서신왕래로 절차탁마하였다. 특히 보임에 대하여 보조의 정신을 잇고 있다. 한암은 견성한 후 27년간 오대산 상원사에 주석하며 산문 밖을 나서지 않았고, 경봉은 통도사에서 1927년 극락암에서 견성한 후 1928년 극락선원을 개설한 이래 많은 납자들과 신도들을 입적하는 1982년까지 제접하며 오후보임하였다. 경봉의 근 현대 고승들간의 서신왕래의 기록인 『삼소굴 소식』에 가장 많은 내용은 한암과 용성과 주고받은 서신임을 확인해 볼 때 사상적으로 서로 영향을 주고받은 것으로 보인다. 따라서 경봉은 그의 선사상의 근저인 평상심이 바로 도를 형성함에 있어서 보조의 선교일치, 한암과 용성의 오후보임 등 지속적인 교류가 지대한 영향을 미쳤으며, 그의 선사상을 밑받침하는 구성요소가 되었다고 보여진다.
Master Gyeong-bong (鏡峰, 1892-1982), the eminent Korean contemporary Seon Master, had been influenced by the ideological exchange of Seon Master Han-am (漢岩), Yong-seong (龍城) and he succeeded the thought of the National Master Bojo (普照). I already bored it out by fact in Bojosasang vol.30 that one of the Gyeong-bong's thought is everyday life is enlightenment (平常心是道). On the ground of this, his thought has its root in that of Bojo, practicing the Seon and Doctrine together, and that of Han-am and Yong-seong, the continued cultivation after enlightenment (悟後保任). National Master Bojo found the basis in Lee tong-hyeon's (李通玄) 「新華嚴經論」 that said that the Doctrine is the talk of Sakyamuni Buddha and the Seon is the mind of Patriarch. It means that the Doctrine and the Seon are not separate but one. The life of Seon Masters, Han-am, Yong-seong and Gyeong-bong, revealed the same truth that Doctrine and Seon are not two. During practicing Seon, Master Han-am always read sutras and analects of Patriarchs. Master Yong-seong eagerly perused the Platform Sermons of the Sixth Patriarch 『六祖壇經』 and the Record of Transmission of the Lamp 『傳燈錄』. Though seon master, Master Gyeong-bong had enlightened while he had preached a sermon of the sutra of the Garland of Buddhas 『華嚴經』. Master Gyeong-bong engaged in continued correspondence with Master Han-am and Master Yong-seong. Especially the Masters stood an inheritor of National Master Bojo, who emphasized the practice of continued cultivation after enlightenment (悟後保任). Master Han-am spent 27 years never leaving the temple, Sangwonsa (上院寺) at Mt. Odaesan (五臺山) after enlightenment. Until his passing into nirvana in 1982 after opening Geuknak Seon Center (極樂禪院) in 1928, Master Gyeong-bong instructed many disciples and lay buddhist at the same time he practiced continually Seon after his enlightenment 1927. The news of Samsogul, corresponding records between Master Gyeong-bong and the acclaimed Seon Masters of his time, gave a good deal of space to Master Han-am and Master Yong-seong. It means that they ideologically influenced each other. In building up the thought of Gyeong-bong, everyday life is enlightenment(平常心是道), Bojo, Han-am and Yong-seong had influenced enormously and they composed the basis of thought of Master Gyeong-bong.
