摘要
석굴암 석굴 관련 옛 기록은 매우 적다. 중수(重修)와 관련된 자료가 거의 없다시피 하여 원형과 변형에 대해서도 자세히 알기 어렵다. 그런 점에서 1891년에 있었던 중수 불사(佛事)의 내력을 적은 상량문의 가치는 여러 면에서 높다. 이 상량문은 1910년대 조선총독부에서 대대적으로 수리 복원하기 이전의 석굴의 모습을 가까이서 살필 수 있는 자료다. 오늘날까지 열띤 논란이 있는 석굴의 원형에 대해 답을 줄 수 있다. 그동안 학계에서는 이 상량문을 소홀히 여기거나 무시하여 왔다. 상투적이고 과장된 표현이 많다는 이유로 연구에 별로 이용되지 못하였다. 이 글에서는 이 자료의 전문(全文)을 자세하게 번역하고 주해(註解)하여 학계의 연구에 이바지하고자 했다. 또 내용을 정확하게 분석하여, 1891년의 중수 불사의 성격과 양상, 그리고 1891년 이전의 석굴 원형에 대해 그 해답을 제시하려 했다. 학계의 뜨거운 논쟁거리인 석굴 입구의 목조전실(木造前室)의 원형적 근거에 대해서도 필자의 견해를 밝혔다. 이 상량문의 내용은 논쟁을 해결할 수 있는 열쇠라 하겠다.
Few ancient records about Seokguram Grotto in Tohamsan Mountain survive to this day. As there are few records about restorations, it is difficult to know much about the original form and variations thereof. Thus the value of commemorative text, which accounts the restoration of 1891, is significant. It is the source which allows us to get the most accurate idea of how Seokguram looked before the invasive restoration of the 1910s by the then Japanese colonial government. This may go some way to provide an answer to the heated exchanges on the original form of Seokguram grotto. So far, the academic world has largely neglected or undervalued the commemorative text; it was deemed that the text suffered from clichés and exaggerated expressions. This paper translates the full text in detail and provides annotations and comments in order to facilitate a serious academic study. Also, through an accurate analysis of its content, the author also tries to offer an answer with regards to the nature and conditions of the 1891 restoration as well as the original form of the grotto before 1891. The author also proffers a view on the much- disputed original form of wooden ante-room at the entrance to the grotto. The commemorative text provides a key to resolving many of disagreement surrounding the grotto.
