The period of the end of the Goryo dynasty and early Joseon dynasty might be a tumultuous period due to change of social guidance ideology from Buddhism to Confucianism. The Buddhist temples tried to involve general public in Buddhist services actively to operate a Buddhist temple economy based on the change. Under this circumstance, the Buddhist communities expanded and embraced the Amitābha for active propagation activities and Monk sculptors also worked sculpture actively. The studies for buddha statures were usually focused on enshrinement of buddha statues in temple but this study focused on the period that the enshrinement of buddha statues in stone pagodas was the only trend s. In addition, majority of enshrined buddha statues in stone pagodas were created by Amitābha, which is a characteristic phenomenon of enshrinement of buddha statues in Korea stone pagodas. Amitābha is aiming to pray for the souls of the departed to be reincarnated in paradise. Therefore, the pagodas were recognized as a place where the Buddha resides, and buddha statues might be enshrined to pray for the deceased and living. According to the contents of prayer for these buddha statues, they were consistently about praying for the deceased and long life, and the rebirth in the Pure land by Amitābha. The enshrinement of buddha statues in stone pagodas created by Amitābha in the period of the end of the Goryo dynasty and early Joseon dynasty enshrined large number of buddha statues by using multistory places of pagodas including stereobate. The Amitābha buddha statues enshrined in the pagodas during the period of the end of the Goryo dynasty and early Joseon dynasty were stored with various relics whereas there are many cases that only buddha statues were enshrined without Sarira Reliquary. It was assumed that the phenomenon that Amitābha buddha statues were enshrined in the pagodas was expanded by participating many public in such as buddhist prayer groups. |
