摘要
본 논문은 최근 미국의 불교학 연구 현황을 살펴보는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 논문은 2010년부터 2017년까지 발표된 미국의 불교학 관련 논문의 80편을 분석하여, 어떠한 논문 주제, 연구 시기, 그리고 어떠한 불교학 프로그램에서 이러한 논문들이 발표되었는지를 살핀다. 이 논문은 크게 네 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 먼저 서구 불교학의 역사에서 어떻게 미국의 불교학의 지형이 형성되는지를 살핀다. 그 다음으로 본 조사에 대한 몇 가지 방법론적 문제들을 살피며 연구의 범위를 정리한다. 그 후, 본 조사 대상인 80편의 논문에 대한 여러 가지 각도의 분석을 제시한다. 마지막으로 과제와 전망으로, 한국의 불교학의 나아갈 점에 대한 논의를 결론으로 대신한다. 논문의 본문 이 외에 본 조사 대상의 논문에 대한 짧은 소개를 포함한 목록을 첨부한다.
This article aims at explaining recent academic trends in Buddhist Studies in the United States. While examining the most recent PhD dissertations (from 2010 to 2017) produced in the major Buddhist Studies programs in the US, the paper provides noticeable patterns in the following three areas: popular areas of research, research periods, and major institutions that these dissertations were produced. Ultimately, the paper hopes to illuminate the strengths of the Buddhist Studies program in the US and to reflect on future directions for the Buddhist Studies in South Korea. The article consists of four parts. First, it starts with an overview of the emergence of the Buddhist Studies program in the West as a modern academic displine. Second, the paper move son to explain methodological concerns and defines the parameters of the analysis. Third, the paper presents the data analysis and the interpretations. The last part of the paper provides suggestions about the future directions for the Buddhist Studies in South Korea. The paper also includes an annotated bibliography at the end.
