지눌의 원돈신해문에서 원돈이란 흔히 화엄을 뜻하는 것으로 이해되고 있다. 그러나 지눌은 화엄만이 원돈이 아니라 선종에도 원돈이 있음을 말하고 있고, 이는 공적영지(空寂靈知)의 자기 심성을 깨달아 믿는 것을 의미한다. 또한 지눌의 원돈신해에는 다양한 선‧교 결합으로서 화엄과의 결합, 기신론과의 결합, 그리고 전간전수(全揀全收)의 결합이 있다. 특히 전간전수의 결합은 네 가지 유형으로 구분될 수 있는데, 여기에는 선문에 입각한 전간전수로서 종밀과 지눌의 입장, 그리고 이치에 입각한 것으로서 의상과 지눌의 입장이 있다. 선문에 입각한 지눌의 전간전수는 종밀과 유사하면서도 차이점을 보이는데, 종밀의 경우는 공적영지의 심성을 가리키고 염정제법을 말하여 전간전수의 이치를 말했지만 지눌의 그것은 심성이 본래 항상 공적영지함을 올바로 ‘깨달은 차원’에서 일컫는 것으로 이는 취하거나 버리지 않으므로 이야말로 저절로 전수·전간문이 되는 것이라 하였다. 또한 지눌은 선교결합에 입각하여 심성의 일진법계를 法의 이의(二義: 불변수연)로서 전수문을 열고, 人의 이문(二門: 돈오점수)으로 전간문을 제시하여 모든 수행을 돈오점수문에 아우른 바 있다. 지눌의 선교결합은 깨달음과 이치만의 결합이 아니라 수행문의 선교결합도 이루어냈는데, 일진법계의 자심반조나 삼현(三玄)에 입각한 간화선에 대한 논의도 여기에 포함된다고 할 수 있다.
In the gate of complete and sudden faith and understanding (圓頓信解門) of Jinul, complete and sudden faith and understanding(圓頓信解) tends to mean Hua-yen(華嚴). So it is to believe and understand the doctrine of Hua-yen as going to a world of enlightenment in an instant. However, Jinul said that complete and sudden faith and understanding(圓頓信解) was in not only the Hua-yen, but also Zen Buddhism. There are various developments of the combination of meditative practices and doctrinal teachings(禪敎結合). They were three types. First is combination with Hua-yen, second is the combination with awakening of faith in the Mahayana. Last is the combination the gates of total subsumption and total discernment(全揀全收). In particular, there are four types of combination of the gates of total subsumption and total discernment. The gates of total subsumption and total discernment of Jinul are similar but differ. Jinul said that the gates of total subsumption and total discernment of himself transcended the object of discrimination and pointed the true mind directly. Because true mind is sunyā and quiet which does not just throw away or discard the consciousness of the heart. In addition, the integration Zen of teachings of dogma(敎) of the gates of total subsumption and total discernment of Jinul was not only a combination of enlightenment and truth but also the way of practicing. So in summary, Jinul's mind-practicing is based on the fact that he first grasps the self-reflecting of true mind, and along the combination of Zen and teachings of dogma the reflecting of whole world was overlapped with self-reflecting of true mind.
