| 摘要 | This article studies the origin and development of the forms of Buddha images from “votive tablets” to “amulets.” It finds that the original popularity of amulets stems from people’s faith in Buddha images, which represent the Buddha, combined with superstition. Votive tablets enshrined in ancient crypts and early-period amulets can portray the beliefs, histories, and societies of their time. Amulets in recent times, however, have been produced for commercial gain by using advertisement and marketing strategies. Their popularity among specific groups is based on people’s faith and belief, which are important factors in the continuation of this business. |
