본 연구는 숭산행원 선사가 견지한 선사상의 내용 및 특징을 고찰하고, 그의 해외포교가 갖는 의의를 오늘날의 관점에서 새롭게 해석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 첫째 숭산 선사는 선의 각 전통이 갖는 특징을 명확히 분석하였는데, 그 기초는 규봉종밀의 견해에 두었다. 그는 여기에 그치지 않고 백파긍선의 견해 또한 수용함과 동시에 이들 두 견해를 창의적으로 융합하는 시도를 하였다. 그러나 궁극적으로는 각 전통이 추구하는 지향점의 내용상 차이는 없음을 강조하였다. 둘째 숭산 선사는 해외포교 현장의 새로운 환경이 가진 맥락에 적합하게 수행법을 변화시키는 시도를 하였다. 그가 제자들에게 항상 강조했던 ‘오직 모를 뿐’과 그가 창안한 공안 수행체계인 ‘십문관’이 대표적인 사례이다. 셋째 그는 수행을 토대로 형성된 정신적 지향점이 현실 속에서 구현될 수 있는 선의 참여적 자세를 강조하였다. 숭산 선사의 해외포교와 관련하여, ‘재일 홍법원’을 시작으로, 홍콩과 미국으로까지 포교의 범위를 확장했던 그는 마침내 미국에서 ‘관음선종’을 창건하였고, 그것을 기반으로 한국불교의 외연을 전 세계로 확장하였다. 이 과정에서 한국불교의 회통성을 해외포교 현장에서 적극적으로 실현하였을 뿐만 아니라, 서구문화에 적합하도록 불교의 현지화를 시도하였다. 교학과 선을 넘나들며 국경을 초월한 전법 활동의 상징적 인물이 된 숭산 선사는 한국불교의 가치를 드높이며 ‘선의 세계화’ 구현을 주도하였다.
This research aims not only to explore the thought of Zen master Seung Sahn and its attributes, but also to interpret the significance of his overseas propagation of Buddhism from a contemporary perspective. First, Seung Sahn clearly analyzed the features of each Zen tradition based on the perspective of Zen master Zongmi. Beyond that, he also accepted the classification of Zen master Baekpa, combining these two viewpoints. Ultimately, however, he emphasized that there is no difference between the objectives of each tradition. Second, Seung Sahn made an attempt to transform the original practice method in order to adapt it to new circumstances in the West. ‘Only don’t know,’ which he emphasized to his disciples, and ‘Ten gates,’ a koan system created by himself, are two representative examples of his attempt. Third, he emphasized the importance of civic engagement that makes it possible for thoughts to become reality. With regard to Seung Sahn’s overseas propagation of Buddhism, starting with ‘Hongbeopwon in Japan,’ its boundary was expanded to Hong Kong and the United States. Finally, this process culminated in the establishment of ‘Kwan Um School of Zen’ in the United States, whereby spreading Korean Buddhism around the globe. In the meantime, not only did he make the feature of mutual unification of Korean Buddhism come true in the field, but he also localized it to suit the Western culture. Transcending the line between Buddhist philosophy and Zen, Seung Sahn has become a symbolic figure for Korean Buddhism by propagating its merit throughout the world.
